This will still need 4-6" of gravel over the logs to make it level


Sure enough there was still enough log to make another length


Got to mount my new Koplin chainsaw mount... it works pretty good. Took me a while to find a position where I could use two lock n ride plugs


Not ideal, as it sticks out a bit... but it definitely needs the two plugs or it's not solid enough... we'll see. It's not like I'm riding around with it on...


... I just have to remember to let the chain cool before putting it in.

An old friend came over so I gave him the tour... got him to snap a pic of me on the gravel pile to give some perspective for it's size

So... so far I've got;
three tandem loads of clay ($150)
three loads of rock with my trailer
four loads of "fill"(horse sh*t) with my trailer
two jackhammer rentals ($200) 27hrs
20X1' culvert ($100)
at least 6 stumps removed
...and countless hours with the chainsaw, and bushwacker

Wow, I've dropped the ball on keeping a running tally! It's tough to keep track, but I'll do my best to remember;

Three tandem loads of clay ($150)
One tandem load of rock
One tandem load of pit run (spread by hand)
With the old Jeep trailer; 6 loads of rock, 4 loads of dirt, 5 loads of Class A, and 15 loads of gravel from the pile. 30 yards
With the new fourwheeler trailer; 25 loads each of rock/ brick and gravel. 25 yards
two jackhammer rentals ($200) 27hrs
20X1' culvert ($100)
lumber, cement pads, & nails for the bridge ($480)
at least 12 stumps removed
...and countless hours with the chainsaw, and bushwacker

So I'm up to $930 (not including gas, equipment repair and maint.), 125 yards of material, 65 of which I loaded and spread by hand, over about 3 years. (first year was clearing trees & stumps, no material put in)

I hope to get another 50 atv trailer loads of gravel this year, not including if I get some more brick... that's stuff's easy.

No I've been too busy with the pool and fourwheeler projects... not to mention it's too hot and the horse flies are still vicious. I do plan to get back at it in the fall.

Well Fall is here!

Stacked some rocks to try and reduce how steep this little hill is. The trail leading up to it was completely flooded monday morning... but that was a heck of a downpour!


Got the rocks from the 15 loads of fill waiting to be spread in my yard


Decided to protect my investment in the bridge and spray some Thompson's water sealer on it. I'd done my daughter's tree swing, as well as the shed's ramp and stairs with the "clear" which turned out pretty dark, so this was a test of the "cedar" tinted.

Hmm, looks pink to me... fer frig sakes... no biggie as it's just a bridge in the woods, but we're tying to decide what color to use on our deck... I guess this ain't it unless it changes as it's dries... ALOT!

Hmmmm. That is a rather unique color. It probably would look not so pink on cedar boards. I put Thompsons on my decks and it lasts for about 4 years then you see the water starting to soak into the wood in spots. The last stuff I put on the decks has lasted 8 years and still sheds water. I got a 5 gallon pail of linseed oil. Put some in a two gallon galvy pail and got it to a boil on the camp stove. I did the heating out about 100 feet from the house - looked like a great way for an explosion or at least a fire. Fortunately, nothing blew up. I came back with the boiling hot linseed oil and put it on the deck with a roller. It finally soaked in and dried after about 24 hours. It hasn't tracked into the house and does not make a slick or snotty surface.

Man, you have chipped a lot of rock and moved a lot of material. Just the though of all you've done makes these old bones ache. Everything sure looks great - you can be really proud of all the improvements.

Man, you have chipped a lot of rock and moved a lot of material. Just the though of all you've done makes these old bones ache. Everything sure looks great - you can be really proud of all the improvements.

What's all the fill for?

Thanks Gold Addict. She's a big motivator for me to push on that's for sure. She's getting better on her little fourwheeler. I'm guessing I've got the rest of this year and next before she wants to take it on the trail.

The fill... well essentially behind the shed is a marsh. It drains across the yard where the fill is, and meets with a brook and gets carried away. Well where the fill is used to be a good 8' lower then beside the house and wet all the time. A local company offered to fill it with "grubbins"... stumps and such, then cover with decent fill. They brought about 30 loads of gurbbins and 30 loads of fill. They're far from done, but it's like pulling hens teeth to get them to come back. Their's 5 lengths of culvert under there, and I need one more. They brought 3 loads this spring and nothing since. I know they need to do paying jobs first... but it's hard to be patient. I bought 12 loads @ $25 each... now buddy just has to come level it. I called and got the "yeah, you're on my list. Culvert will be there monday" That was 3 weeks ago. Still nothing. I'm gonna ask him to just leave an excavator here a weekend and I'll do it. Anyway, that section will still be lower then the yard by the house... but it'll be dry and useable. It'll also meet a nice rock hill across from the house. I can look in the archives to see if I can find some good progress pics.

In this pic you can see that the marsh is behind the firewood. It used to flows left across the trail and flood between the lawn and far hill. This is the section I've culvered and am filling in.

So the bridge is a lot browner, but with kind of an orange tint. Not bad.


We actually spent a good hour there. Had a snack of cheeze and crackers. Watched "Nemo" the squirrel eat the crackers she dropped. Chucked branches in a pile to clean up a bit. Took turns dancing on the bridge as the other sang.

She decided she wanted her own little girl bridge, so this was the result.
