So I got a call from my "Fill Wanted" signs. This lady down the road had a load of clay (so she told me) that she wanted to get rid of. She has horses, and the load had been used to divert runoff. She's selling the place and needs to get rid of it. The bonus is that she has a tractor to load me!

So I decided that I'll use it to lesten one of the hills (last one on the vid...and the one where I pulled the tree down) Here's a pic from below after the first time I rented the jackhammer

From below

From above

Bringing dirt in

Four loads spread... and a look after tree tippin' and 2nd jackhammer rental.

Well, I'm no dirt expert... this is mostly horsey poop... with big rocks in it... but mostly, ok, let's call it compost. I'm gonna have to cover this with some serious rock to keep it from turning to mud. I've gotten two more loads, but they're going on the lawn. LOL Ah well, it should be ok.

Brings new meaning to shiite-load.

Maybe she will sell you here tractor cheap.:D

/Sigh. After seeing your trailer, I now have yet one more project to do. I always try to have the right tool for the job. And when I have to make the tool(trailer), it usually leaves me with a lot less time to do the actual job.
Nice job on the trail. It reminds me of the work we are doing on our property. Not the rock work. Just the effort that is being put forth.

It was a MF 1030. For having turf tires, and no counter weight she did really well. She was pretty cute too... thought about taking some pics... you know, for you guys, but thought it would be a little awkward. LOL

No more progress, but I took more pics. LOL Here's the same hill as the last pics... we'll call this one the driveway end.

Here's one load of clay used to level off before the decent and the tree I yanked down. To the right of this pic is where I hope to put my little campground

Here's where I put five more loads of compost. That corner of the lawn's never been finished. Behind the tarp will eventually be some stairs down to a slab, with a retaining wall. There's a walkout for the basement there.

The driveway end of the trail is at the top of the driveway's corner

We'll call this one the house end of the trail (even though it's off the driveway too) Before;

After two tandem loads of clay, a culvert, and two of my trailer loads of rock

Looking the other way. It's a much easyer slope now. I had a local excavating company come in and bring me grubbings to fill my yard... they spread the clay and installed the culvert, as well as spread the clay at the other trail end... all for free! : ) I'm guessing $4,000 worth of fill, trucking, excavation. The tree loads of clay I had got for $50 each because of a big job going on nearby.

The view from my bedroom window.

So... so far I've got;
three tandem loads of clay ($150)
three loads of rock with my trailer
four loads of "fill"(horse sh*t) with my trailer
two jackhammer rentals ($200) 27hrs
20X1' culvert ($100)
at least 6 stumps removed
...and countless hours with the chainsaw, and bushwacker

In the last pic the trail will just continue off of the driveway. The clay will be covered in gravel... the other dirt will be lawn. The contractor said he may have more fill for me, and if he does (pics suck at showing elevation) the lawn will continue level to the hill in the upper left corner of the pic. I'll need another two lengths of culvert.

I've got a quick question; I have access to this pile of finely broken shale. It's almost like gravel. I plan to rent a machine to load my trailer and dump on the trail... and get as much done over a weekend as possible. My question is this; will a small skidsteer have enough penetrating power to dig this up? It's been there for a long time, and I can't quite drive my round shovel in it without a kick. My local Cat rental store will rent me a 216 over a weekend with 10 hours run time for $140. I just have to get it moved. If I have to use a small excavator loading time will more then double. Thoughts?

One load (sigh!)

I don't think it will have any trouble at all. If you are concerned, rent a bucket that has a tooth bar installed, then you for sure will be fine.

guess i'll play the devil's advocate, so apologies in advance!!!!! you are to be commended for the energy, work, engineering, and creative ambition for this project. way to go! if i might ask...were the reasons for purchasing the property to develop it? or to be in remote wilderness? although 4 acres is not a lot, you seem to be within an awesome wilderness! had you considered just leaving it as is for that reason? or do you feel more engaged now that you have a well developed through fare completely around it? would not a small unobtrusive hiking trail be enough? any erosion problems? (and you did do great on hauling in rock, etc). did you have these conversations with yourself/significant other before embarking on the project? just asking....personally, i really like your property ! (a bit better than your highway around it) so consider this a compliment with a question. good luck!

Ah yes, a tooth bar. Good idea!

bubba; No, I didn't buy the property with this trail in mind. We bought here for privacy. The trail just kind of came to be. I border on water comission land, so even though I only own 4 acres, their's hundreds behind me that won't be developed. I do feel more "engaged" with the trail. I can walk undeveloped forest whenever I'd like... I figgure; why have it if I'm not going to use it?

Did I ask my wife?... no... I don't usually ask, just reconsider if the level of protest is high. LOL Seriously though, she loves the trail.

The width of the trail is more a result of the equipment I have at my disposal... though I think it will serve our uses well. Walking two abreast, rideing the go kart fast, etc.

Also; if this were to be left alone, I'd give it five years before you couldn't even tell someone was through there. I figgure once it's all done and graveled, I'll build some type of tow behind grader to keep vegetation down.

Gearhead, you are one hard working man. That Jeep and trailer are nice pieces of equipment. The dump would be a real back saver, for sure.

But I have found on my property, especially the woodlands, if you put a trail in, someone is going to trespass on it. From the looks of that last video, you can come in the back way. Although if anyone was driving a ATV or truck up there, you would hear them.

You're absolutely right. I have had problems with people walking through that stretch so I put the signs up. Nothing since, but I'm not around weekdays... so I'm just assuming it's stoped. The plan is to fell a bunch of trees across the exit at the end of the video and pile up brush once construction's done.

Gathered the rocks that were in my crappy dirt after spreading it on the lawn and dumped over the other crappy dirt.

This log in my retaining wall kept pushing back and down the hill when I'd drive over it...

...so this guy was voluntold to be a brace

Nothing comes easy does it?

Walked it over with the prybar, then pryed the butt down the hill until she finally fell... and slid down the jebus hill!

Now it's WAY far from where I want it... so I'll bring the Jeep over and pull it up.

Gotta take the trailer off... may as well grab some firewood on the way out.

Love having a (virtually) ballanced trailer! Just unhook and roll out of the way. I'll deal with that later.

The old girl didn't even breath hard... but I sure did when I pulled it back by hand! It's probably 6" at the little end, 8" at the big, and 25' long

Did my best to notch this end

The other end's butted up against the base of that oak

At this point I noticed some of the bark had come off... and the OCD in me kicked in and I peeled the entire thing. LOL

No too sure about the nails... I may replace them with a brace like I put on the other end.

Better view of the corner... I'm debating trying to pull that tree down... it sure is in the way for the Jeep, and obviously much more for the trailer... but I hate to take out more then needed.

and finally the brace to keep it from slideing downhill

Great pictures. If the road doesn't work out, with all that crappy dirt you have hauled, it would make a great terrace garden.

A local excavation company's started filling in my yard, and I wanted to them to fill in the future campground, but the dumptruck driver didn't want to drive over those rocks I had at the entrance... so the rush was on to cover them

That's three loads, and I ended up putting another to the right and one where the trailer's sitting. Come to find out they're done for now and are only coming back in a couple weeks. LOL Mad rush for nothing. Ah well. They did bring me a load of rock for the house end of the trail! I'm stocked about that... the forman also said he'd give me another for the other end... I'll get him to put it at the hill where I pulled the tree down to lessen the slope. This is all free BTW : ) So both ends of the trail will be done other then class A topcoat!

Here's the yard
