Yup. I had a 359 Peterbilt and a custom built toyhauler (an ex dry van) for several years in CA. Tried every which way to not have it registered commercially, and failed. It was even insured as an RV the whole time.
Eventually got away from the $1,600 registration fees and all the other nonsense by registering it as an "antique automobile". That resulted in a $40 registration fee, no log books, etc.
Moved here and got it registered as a motor home, no questions asked. It did have a 63" sleeper, which probably helped. Anyway, one of numerous reasons I fled.
