Some of the newer (2002+?) Suburban/Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade 1/2 ton vehicles came with an AWD center diff, that might hold up better than something out of a smaller vehicle.To do it right, think about the GMC Syclones. AWD, center diff, turbo V6. That would be the way to do it. Modernize that, with IRS.
A regular 4x truck could be lowered. But it would have issues with the the drivetrain; regular 4x4 system would be too bound up on the street. Would have to have a differential or something between the transfercase and front end, ala Audi Quattro or Syclone.
