Inspector,

Thank you very much.....

I just got back from Autozone with my water temp gauge.......I enden up buying the Sunpro 2" mechanical.......Sunpro item number CP8207..........$16.74 with tax...........

I guess that I need a metric adapter, which Autozone don't have.............I saw in the thread link that you sent me that the adapter is a 16mm X 1.5mm..........What is this and where do I get it?? Do I need teflon also??

Thanks alot for your time and patience.....

You may want to find out from the guys where you bought the tractor if they had the radiator serviced. With these old tractors (any old vehicles) you never know if it had the right coolant mixture in or if they used dirty water to fill the radiator etc. I rebuilt a 66 Ford F100 some time ago and I had a similar experience in that sometimes it would run normal temps and then suddenly run hot for no apparent reason. I ended up having the radiator serviced. It was about 60% blocked. Buildup of rust and gunge in the core. After they recored it, the problem was 100% sorted.

In your case, I would forget the gauges and read up on cooling systems in general, beginning with never removing the cap from a hot radiator.

Yes sir,

I do believe you are correct......I still have a burn mark under my left arm right in the center of my arm pit........Its actually more aggravating than it is hurting........But it still hurts.

A mechanical gauge is nice to have. I never liked the lights on farm equipment. A good rule of thumb for "Bush Hogs" is five (5) PTO horsepower for each foot in width. Example a five foot Bush Hog equals twenty five (25) PTO horses. A Bush Hog to large for a tractor will bring on heating problems in a hurry. Permanent damage will also occur to the engine and drive line. A Bush Hog is in my opinion one of the most dangerous pieces of equipment to use with a tractor. I don't think I would feel safe using one that was to large for the tractor.

I agree...........the 5' bush hog squealer is too big for my tractor........

I MAY HAVE SOLVED MY PROBLEM................

I flushed out the radiator and engine block, like Soundguy recommended.............................Was pretty dirty, but not as bad as expected...........Then I noticed something............The fan/alternator belt was a tad loose...........I could turn the fan with a little pressure with of course the engine killed, and the belt would not turn.......I tightned the belt up............I then went back to my bush hogging..........I actually got everything cut!!........The light NEVER came on and I was cutting in 4th low, and 2nd high.....Tested it with a cooking thermometer and it read about 195 degrees...........I just need a way to test the light now.................ANY SUGGESTIONS??????.....When do I need to put antifreeze back in? What mixture do I use????.............Stuart with RCO is still sending me a new temp sending unit....

Test the light??? Didn't you say it came on, so you knew it was hot? There is nothing else to test, it works. Sounds like you have found and fixed the problem with the heating, already.

I know why the light didn't come on.............

The wire where it plugs in on the sensor wasn't making good contact.......Anyway,.......The light does come on......I stuck a thermometer in the radiator and it was reading between 180 and 195 degrees and the LIGHT WAS ON..................I do not believe the light should be on at these temperatures..........I think the sensor is bad............RCO is sending me one.............I'll just have to remember to put antifreeze in it before winter.............A buddy of mine has some "water wetter" that i'll put in the radiator......He said that it only takes a few cap fulls...........I'm still going to install my Sunpro temp gauge, as soon as I find the correct adapter somewhere........

Thanks,

Travis

Travis,
If nothing else, order it straight from Sunpro here
Look under accessories under products

Kit CP7574 I am assuming?

Travis,
I did a search on CP7574 and had about 8 hits, so I'd say that was the one.
Actually, if you do a search on gauges (and guages) in the Yanmar section, you'll get so much info.

Thanks Inspector, AND everyone else.

O.K...........I found the kit, that has to be specially ordered, from Advance Auto Parts..........I will order it tomorrow...........It is the Sunpro CP7574 kit.

Now, I performed another test............With the end conclusion that the 5' Bush Hog Squealer IS DEFINITELY TOO MUCH CUTTER for my tractor..................I cut some more grass with it........THIS TIME, I put the radiator cap on HALF WAY and continued cutting with the hood open, stand up out of the seat (I know, dangerous) so I couls see what the radiator was doing..................Well, it got hot and water started filling up in the overflow bottle..........and started coming out the top of the bottle..........I shut the tractor down and took the bush hog off and parked it..............I NEED SMALLER IMPLEMENTS, OR A BIGGER YANMAR......probably a YM3000????

Did you check to make sure the pto shift lever is set to the 540 RPM setting? One of the differences about grey market's is that they have more than just one PTO speed setting.

I do light cutting with a 5ft brush cutter, but I'm on the lookout for a 4. I never overheat or come close, but I still need to get a 4ft. Cutting between trees is easier because if I fit the front end of the tractor, I know the back will go through too.:)

Wish you guys lived close to me. I have a nearly 4' I would like to trade for a 5'.

OK,something I have learned recently...... I'm relatively new to the tractor thing and have a YM2000 just like you... I can definitly bog down the 4' so, as the others have said 5' would be too big.. However, if your just cutting short grass and not working it hard(PTO shifter "down" in 1st gear) you shouldnt overheat.. I say this because I have worked my tractor pretty hard over the year + of having it and never overheted it untill recently... I have been religious about cleaning the radiator screen of debris but still developed an overheat condition, out of the blue... So, I went through everything mentioned here including a radiator flush and straight water fill.. It was fine while bushhogging last week.. However, I took the tiller to the hunting property this weekend and over heated every 15min until I found the problem... I was frustrated and pulled the radiator screen off and happened to look at the radiator(while I was waiting for it to cool) and realized I couldnt see through it.. The dirt and dust allong with the fine particles that the screen didnt stop had clogged the radiator so I was getting no airflow.. After loading it up and taking it to the car wash for a good cleaning, I proceded to work that little machine with the tiller for 5hrs straight with no hint of overheat.. DONT FORGET TO WASHE THE RADIATOR:D ... Just something else to think about, I kicked myself over that one.....

Forget the cutter, you need to fix your overheating problem. Check/replace the radiator cap, backflush the radiator, or have it professionally cleaned. On your tractor, you should be more concerned about it running hot enough. My YM2000B runs about 155/160 in any weather and all conditions until the radiator begins to plug with chaff.

normde2001 is right Forget the cutter and fix your overheating problem. I have a YM1700 and can run a 5 cutter on it all day and it want run hot.

/ Problem With New Yanmar?? #39
I was only going to offer that my 1602D pulls a 4 ft cutter with no problems...........according to the theory above, at 16 PTO hp I should on have a 3 footer? At any rate, I'm not sure the cutter is your problem........

I think I'd go the gauge route first, so you really know what's going on. I had the loose fan belt problem too, a new belt properly installed did the trick. Clean your radiator exterior, put on the gauge, then check it out and see where you're at...........

As HGM and others have said. Cleaning the radiator screen is not enough. Small crud gets through the screen and clogs the radiator fins.

I mowed a couple of weeks ago (8 acres, 5' JD, YM2220D, 100 deg. weather) and every 2 or 3 circuits the temp would creep up to the top of the green arc. Clean the screen and temp would go back down. But, every so often, I'd have to run into the shop and blow crud out of the radiator fins with compressed air. With clean screen and radiator, the temp gage hovered around the middle of the green.
