Another one that is cheap and not poisonous is a mix of flour, sugar and baking soda. About 1/3 of each.
Works better than bait blocks and its cheaper too.

This has successfully worked for me for both rats and mice. No poison, just peanut butter and water.
Bonehead

if you don''t put enough water in it, the little buggers will jump right out. I found that out for myself.

Could not find any of those pills here in our small town but will be going to Des Moines next week so will look in some bigger stores there. If not will try just straight oyster shell ground fine and see what that does. Put some more grain for bait on my electric zapper but forgot to plug the fencer back in and was at a meeting last night so have not tested the zapper again but they did eat all the grain from it with rat hair from the dead one still there. So that is encouraging. I will make some of the buckets with the peanut butter and water soon. Maybe with all of these I can get rid of some of them. Have set out some traps but I only get mice in the rat traps.

The problem with poison is the rats go hide somewhere to die and that's usually in your walls or attic.

Years ago my dad built a new supermarket near where the old town dump was. Years later they started an assisted living facility across the street and all of sudden we had rats in the store (not a good thing for a food establishment...would see them in the trash building munching on lettuce...we named them Boris and Natasha). Called in the exterminator that baited with hamburger and poison...they died behind the walls and "stunk" (not a good thing for a food establishment). Spent a lot of time on the ladder pouring chlorine bleach down wall cavities.

Moved to the east coast on a job related thing...a development not far from the old town landfill. In-laws came out to visit and thought it would be a good idea to bring corn-cobs and a squirrel feeder for the boys. Didn't take long before the neighborhood got into an old fashioned shell corn fight (your magazine is in your hand and you strip off the ammo as needed). Anyway wasn't long before I noticed fraying on the rugs in the garage. And then noticed "droppings" much larger than anything a mouse could produce. My wife went nuts and baited with D-con. Bait disappeared and she was happy...until I opened the hood of the garden tractor and saw the D-con "blue-logs" stacked up like cord wood (I was impressed at their precision). Ended up with the Victor rat traps...first pass they licked it clean. Next pass I employed something I read...bit of ground beef in a small pouch of cheese cloth attached to the trap. RIP Natasha II (think she was "ripe" and ready to deliver).

Victor traps work well. I have found that the peanut butter doesn't work as well as American cheese slices. They love it.

The electric trap works but I think they are more afraid of going inside them. I've only caught a few that way.

The spin into bucket is really good for mice but a rat can jump out of a 5 gal bucket.

Cats work but they come with their own problems.
