That don't look like any mouse I have ever seen! Rat???

Not primitive but I got my first rat last night with my own idea. I have seen these rat zappers and thought I would like to have one but did not feel like putting out the money for one. I thought to myself that an electric fence jolt should do one in. Mounted some scrap aluminum on a board and a second piece on top of that separated by a small piece of wood. Then I just put some grain on it and connected it to the electric fencer with some wire with alligator clips from an old battery charger so it is easy to disconnect. Went out this morning to let the chickens out and heard the loud popping. It had fried away some of his head so I guess it works. Now will be interesting if it works again. I have heard they learn quick and hard sometimes to get them to do it twice. On another note there was a dead rat laying there from some homemade bait the neighbor lady gave me. Made from peanut butter, oatmeal ( for binder ) and some crushed oyster shell pills. I have never heard of them but she said they sell them in the vitamin section. I guess what kills them in the calcium in the oyster shell. They supposedly can not digest calcium and die from liver damage. Also there is nothing about this that is harmful to other animals, no poison involved. There is nothing about this that alarms other rats to not eat it. I am going am to town this afternoon and try to find these pills. Don't know if just crushing oyster shell itself in to it works or not. Hoping this will let me get my rat problem under control without using poison.Don't want my dogs eating a poisoned rat.

Let us know how it works. That might be good for gophers, too.

This has successfully worked for me for both rats and mice. No poison, just peanut butter and water.

I am sure those work well, but you do not have the benifit of those cute little mouse pancakes that the deadfall makes. :D

Very clever. The sticky pads work also, but I didn't like them. I caught a lot of June bugs, one mouse and a little blue-tailed lizard. I managed to free the lizard...minus his tail...but don't use the stick pads any more because of the collateral damage. Besides, the neighbor's feral cats keep the mouse population to a negligible level.

yep, I haven't seen a mouse anywhere around the house in years.. but we have kitties. Once in a while one will sneak into the garage, but it's life expectancy is hours at best.
