Preventing split fingertips in cold weather

Additionally, as treatment for a split, it is helpful to thin the skin in the area of the crack. They all seem to originate in the "valleys" between fingerprint ridges. Careful filing with a sapphire or diamond grit nailfile can inhibit the crack and limit stress as it heals.

That sounds like it'll be worth me trying.

In keeping with my policy of trying the cheapest suggestion first, my glycerin arrived today. It feels kind of tacky in comparison to the Aquaphor I usually use and I think I'm going to like it.

We sound like a bunch of women discussing skin care products but if any of these suggestions prevents even one day with a stinging split fingertip, my ego will just have to take the hit.

@stuckmotor once you have tried a few things, I would not be afraid to customize something for your skin, doing things like mixing the glycerin with your aquaphor, or bag balm or whatever. Mixing while warm helps.

I think you'll be happy with the results, which doesn't seem to fade away when washing your hands. I use pure glycerin every night.

Here's the best stuff. I used to have calluses on the heels of my feet. In the winter (dry house) I would get cracks 1 1/2" to 2" long and fairly deep. Nothing worked until my neighbor told me about this stuff.

The calluses are gone from my feet now, but sometimes use it on the tips of my fingers. I put it on and then a bandaid.

In case anyone else is interested, I looked up the ingredients;

Water, Propylene Glycol, Lanolin, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Mineral Oil, Petrolatum, Corn Oil, beeswax, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Cetyl Alcohol, Urea, Magnesium Sulfate, Allantoin, Phosphoric Acid, Camphor, Menthol, Fragrance, FD&C Red 40​

It reads to me like the recipe dates from when the company was founded, not that that is a bad thing, other than FD&C red #40, which seems unnecessary.

I use the OKeeffes Working Hands, preferably in the tube as it's easier to apply than the paste.
55 years ago I had several bouts of severely dried / cracked skin on my feet, which was very painful. The country doc "prescribed" Epsom Salt soaks and Bag Balm... Man did that stuff stink! The Bag Balm worked very well though.

That’s where she uses it. She wouldn’t want me to do anything that would make me look younger. She’s been trying to age me since we met. All I here is wait till your as old as I am.
