I have 25 or so customers with 6.0L and none have had any major issues. Some EGR and one Turbo and all these trucks work hard.
Chris
The hard working trucks with 6.0L have less troubles than the lightly worked ones. My good friend bought a 2004 6.0L to add to his fleet. Cost an arm and a leg in injector, turbo, egr, headgaskets, etc etc. It had already had a turbo done on it before he bought it.
I'm sure most of the trouble was the light use and idling it had with the previous owner. By now most of the 6.0's that are going to have problems should have, but you still see them for sale with blown and brand new motors on Kijiji/Craigslist.
This guy must not know how to drive a auto transmission vehicle. Really though, I have never heard of anyone with any brand fixing the same component 5 times. Stop before going from D to R, change the fluid as per the schedule, and a auto will last a long time. Heck, even a Dodge auto would do better than that. While I have another friend with over 220k on his 06 6.0 F350 SRW with no problems with the motor, getting it rebuilt now however just as a precaution. It is easy for him to rebuild it now as it's in the middle of it's 5th tranny rebuild. He said that automatic transmission is the worst part of that truck, but he can't break the engine. He doesn't do too much towing, but does put max and overloaded payload in the bed quite a bit. He is a commercial fisherman.

Good thing he drives a Ford or he would be on his 12th tranny.

Yeah, right on with the 7.3l PSD. Can't really go wrong with any year, just as with anything though, some years are better than others.
As for the 6.0l, some either have tons of problems, or none.
I have a friend with an 04 F550 4x4 dump truck 6.0, tons of problems since the day he got it.

Go for the 7.3l and you won't be gambling, or wishing you got another motor for that matter. Same with the 5.9 cummins.
