I tried doing a search, figuring someone has needed to know to paint their tractor, but I didn't find much. Can anyone recommend a power painter, brand, model, etc? Something not to expensive would be nice as I don't have much other use for one.

Do you have an air compressor ? If so you can buy a cheap paint sprayer from H.F. it won't give you a professional job but, it performs ok .If you'er talking about a wagner type power painter. I don't think they will work with the type paint that you would use on your tractor as the ones I've seen , are made of plastic parts.

I don't have an air compressor. I was looking at the Wagner units and trying to figure out which one would work. Well, maybe I can borrow an air compressor from a neighbor.

One of the things that an amateur painter (like me) eventually learns the hard way is that the choice of equipment may not be the most important factor, but instead the control of dust and air flow. In other words, you need a place to paint that minimizes dust and prevents effects from wind and other external air flows. At the same time, you need a way to extract paint vapors, that can hang in the air like fog for some types of paint, that come from using compressed-air painting equipment. It’s why professional painting establishments have paint booths.

Bottom line: it’s not easy to do a good job with good equipment in the wrong environment, and all too easy to get a bad result.

Good luck!

If you really want a decent finish you need a HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) paint sprayer. Wagner and Campbell Hausfeld both have some lower priced ones. I've got a higher priced unit so I can't comment on their economy lines.

You can however, get a good looking finish using spray cans if you prepare the surface, take your time, and control the paint environment as Dancer pointed out.
