I have a 500kg Hitachi chain hoist on a beam in my shop, but my friend decided it needs a trolley before he helps me rebuild a tractor 😉

The used beam is flame straightened, and this week it will go under the rafters.

I was wondering, how does everybody have their umbilical power supply to the hoist: with a sliding door rail system, or is a steel cable with chain links as sliders, satisfactory ?

I have done it both ways over the years. First one (done 30+ years ago in my dad's shop) we zip tied 2" rings to the power cable and then the rings slid on a steel wire. Worked fine. When I did my own about 10 years ago, I used barn door rail with little wheel trolleys that had a cast loop on them, and zip tied the cable to the loop. I think that was overkill (and much more expensive) but it sure slid nice and smooth.

I already have a roll of leftover new steel wire, which was too thick for the overhead door. The ones with wheels on a steel wire, at the company i did my apprenticeship, never worked right, they allways jammed.

I have a portable that I use whenever the time calls for it but, it isn't as convenient as what you guys are doing. Nice job!

Got a pole at the wooden wall to support that end, and have the stuff hanging. My mates brother in law checked yesterday, and said he wanted it down at ground level to replace some burnt wiring before hooking up the electrical cord...

I ordered cast aluminium trolleys with a nylon wheel in them to run the umbilical cord on the steel cable, we'll see how that works...

Have several 2” receivers in shop to mount crane or other tools. Attach to rolling welding bench to self load or for mobile use. Base modified to support multiple jacks for support.

It ain't much but it works for me. A couple 2x4's with some grommets and a 3 to 1 pulley.

Got the cable suspended on the pulleys, but it jams. Next thing im going to do is order some swivels so which ever method i choose to fixate the cable in the eyelet, it wont cause twist which jams the pulleys....

I designed and built a gantry crane above a bridge crane that I built into my new shop. For the pivoting lights, I have a power outlet on the crane and a cord that is loosely zip tied to a cable that can side back and forth down to a switch. The bridge was designed for 4,000lbs and the top gantry was designed for 2,000lbs. The lower crane has a manual hoist and the top crane is electric. The gantry crane has a trap door that I can lift things into the loft to work on or store. The bridge rolls 6' wide and 21' long and the gantry has a travel distance of 12' on top of the bridge or can be disassembled to be used in other areas. The gantry is height adjustable as well being able to go from 6' up to 9'.

I also have a crane over my plasma table that I figure can go to at least 1,000 lbs but it's just for lifting plate onto my table or light stuff out of my pickup bed. This crane can travel 10 ft wide by 30 ft long in the shop!

I have a 2 post gantry now. Will be building a shop in a year or 2. Then the 2 post will be inside. After the shop is built, I have a 4 post gantry I'll put outside.

All right, the rollers jammed, because the ordinary 4 wire cable loops, just like it was wound on a roll in the cable factory.

I tried swivel eyes, just plain sliding on the steel wire. It works flawlessly !

So whenever someone wants to make an umbilical cord, either go with expensive sliding door rails, or keep it simple and use large steel rings that dont jam when they twist.

I spent 30 euro for rollers that are useless, but the next guy can use this information to do it right the first time 😉
