Post hole digger stand

That's simple enough to make and should fold up nice for storage or just getting it out of the way. Thanks for posting the pic, Tom. I believe you now Lol! ;)

That's what I did with mine, and for the same reason. When I got it, I hung it by a chain hoist from a tree limb. I had every intention of making a mobile stand on wheels to roll it around but .......?????? Anyway, hooking it up when hanging is so easy that I left it there. The only drawback is that it is outside in the weather but it is sheltered to some extent by the tree.

Mine's basically the same except I used a kid's swing set frame - just got a chain & hook hanging down to hang it with - welded a 1/2 loop of 1/4"HRS rod to the balance point on the phd's boom

I saw a pretty sweet stand at an upcoming auction, I plan to bid on this setup.

Thanks, Japody. I have fun with it - good place to keep a record of my projects and things!

Kebo, did you build one like this. I'd like to know the dimensions as I'm going to build one similar to it. I'll have mine on castors as well but need to know the minimum width of the structure so it won't tip over.

Thanks,
Larry

If I can get a picture to post from my phone. My setup allows me to backup to my PHD and hookup easily.

Didn't quite attach as I wanted but....

I have investigated many different ways to store a PHD. Most seem to weight ~ 175 pounds up to 250 pounds for the mid weights many of us use. A friend's TSC/SpeeCo PHD weighs ~ 187# and my ETA 6900 HD weighs ~ 237 pounds. At my age I can barely manhandle the TSC unit when stored laying on the ground and decided I would not even try to do so when I was through with the current project using the ETA I attached to the tractor, component by component, as it was shipped to me new.

The easiest stand to construct and attach and detach seemed to me to be the ones hanging from a rafter inside of a building. My shop will not be built until this coming winter so that was out for me. I also saw guys hanging them from trees but did not want to go that route.

So earlier this week I combined those two types of ideas into a unit that works immensely well in all regards for my needs. Simple to build, simple to operate and only takes a few pounds of effort to detach/attach, along with a few minutes of time. Hanging from a single chain allows maximum adjustment latitude and ease of use. If it were inside protected from the weather I would have used an inexpensive chain hoist instead of the chain for hanging it to allow even more adjustability.

I may add a 45 degree support at the 90 degree junction of the vertical and horizontal members at each end to help with long-term potential sagging of the 4 x 4 cross piece due to the weight hanging centered on its ~5' length.

Materials:
- 2 each 4 x 4 x 10' buried ~ 32" deep for the uprights, sitting on 4" of gravel in a 9+" diameter hole.
- 1 each 4 x 4 x 8' trimmed to ~ 6.5' for the horizontal support. (I added the extra length past the sides of the uprights just in case I may want to use them for something in the future.)
- 2 each 3/8" x 8" lag screws to attach the top member to the uprights.
- 1 each 5/16" chain ~ 3.5' long with a grab hook on the implement end and a slip hook at the top to wrap the chain around the horizontal support.
- ~ 400# of bagged concrete to set the posts.
