Excellent! I want one of those. Were you ever able to, or interested in estimating how many gallons of diesel went into building it?
Great question, but that's really tough to say. I know the Cat D5K rental was using about 45 gallons per day, and we were probably averaging 9 hours a day. I only filled the big Dresser up a few times, but that was probably around 250 gallons total. Plus scraper plus my friends dozer...

I'll make a guess of 1100 gallons for all dozer and scraper work. I was paying $3.26/gal for off road when we were running all 3 machines at the same time. It was cheaper earlier on when it was just me on the Dresser. I'm sure glad I didn't wait around "for prices to come down"!!!

Dude. ~$4k for fuel to make that massive a pond/dam is not bad at ALL, in my completely unexperienced opinion. nice!

Here are some pictures of the spillway, hopefully you can tell what it is :)

I leveled it out with the box blade a few days ago. Just spread grass seed this morning. Will be spreading grass clippings over it today before we get some rain (hopefully).

First pic is from the opposite side of the pond. Second is zoomed in on spillway. Last few are taken up close.

Here is a video of yesterday's activities:

Your dog seems upset you didn't leave any sticks.
Nice work.

It looks really nice. Do you still think it's an acre and a half? From the pictures, it seems bigger.

My ponds are both in red clay, and it took a couple years to clear up. The smaller pond still gets cloudy after a big rain, but then when it clears up, the algae will take over in summer for several weeks. It's next to my barn, so it gets all of the animals in it to drink, and also bare dirt where they walk and tear up the ground. Horses are the worse.

My bigger pond stays pretty clear no matter how heavy the rain is, but it has a lot better vegetation around it. It's also my fishing pond, and I work harder at maintaining the grass around it.

You can speed up the process with gypsum. It will cause the silt that's floating around in the water to settle faster. I dumped a bunch of sheetrock scraps in my small pond and in a week, it was night and day better. A significant change!!! But then the algae took over and it was my worse algae bloom ever, so I've never done it again.

You need to decide what predator fish you want. Your pond is too small for more then one predator, so its either catfish, or bass. Don't do both, it will create too much competition and stunt the growth of both species. When the water clears up, start with minnows. I went with Fathead minnows. They bread like crazy and they provide a never ending supply of food for your feeder fish. I went with copper nose bluegill. I thought about crappie, but my pond isn't big enough for them, and they will quickly take over a pond. The bluegill are probably the best feeder fish for bass because of how big they will grow, and how well they do in my climate. You can put the bluegill and minnows in this year, but wait until the water temps are warmed up next year before putting bass or catfish in. That will give you a feed base that is breeding and increasing in numbers.

Awesome pond! Makes me wanna dig a third one. Keep the grass high on the spillway.

Thanks again Eddie, great advice. When it is full I'll take a drone picture for reference and then check the area covered on a satt view.

Brandi, that's how I feel too, ready to build another one, it has been a neat project!

Got started on a dock yesterday, my brother stopped by and helped for a bit. First one I've built, I made it up on the fly using materials I already had sitting around, so don't be too critical please :)

I've got an old deck from a pool that was taken down that I've been saving for a project... I think that material will work good to cover this. Final dimensions will be about 8' wide by 18' long. When the pond is overflowing the bottom half of the I beams will be under water.

Biggest mistake I made on my pond was not building a dock. Now I keep thinking of ways to do it, but I never seem to have the time, and then I think of another way to build it, and nothing happens. It's one of those projects that should have been done a long time ago.

Eddie, build a floating dock in your shop area during the winter, after dark. Then just put in two posts in the water to position and let if float with the water level.

I had a problem with algae and added some areators to help the beneficial bacteria eat it. Also the algae lowers the oxygen level and can kill some fish. The water is much cleaner and the fish are more active. I got mine at septic solutions, they have septic air pumps that are quite and don’t use much electricity. I got a kit and used a Jon boat and rope to set the head and sinking hose.

A nearby buddy had a 5 or so acre pond built several years ago. He built a quite large dock before it filled with water and supported it by old creosote utility poles driven or dug in. But he didn’t put enough posts in the center of the 16 x 24 landing (?) area. It was like walking across a trampoline. He had a bear of a time adding in more posts later.

That pond looks great. Trenches are one structure, piles are another. We just finished draining and de-silting a 7 acre pond, rebuilding the dam and creating new structure. Now we are looking to restock fish and get it growing again. It's slow and expensive.....

I'd love for you to start a thread and show your process and progress.

I'll see what I can do. One problem with capturing a project like this is that photos dont do justice to the scale . A drone would be really great, but Im not that into that. We learned a ton - how a good dam is built, how much silt can accumulate over 60 years, where to ditch sediment, how to grow grass on silt, all of it. The funniest thing for me is all the keyboard pond reconditioners that give advice like, "get a long boom excavator to scoop silt from the edge of the pond." Or better still, "Sell the silt to the county for road projects." Clearly, those folks have never seen what 5 yards of pond sediment looks like, or that 6 months later it is still the consistency of pudding.

Got about 3" of rain earlier in the week, now it's about 1' from spilling over.

Yesterday myself and a few others went fishing at my friend's and we stocked my pond with 3 bass and 6 perch.

Today I added a row of cinder blocks to the dock, next I'll pour a 10'x2' concrete pad on top of the blocks that will come up to the height of the deck boards, then build the decking. After that I'll cut the grade down slightly so the grass will be level with the concrete pad and dock, that way the kids can get way back and run as fast as possible to jump off the end lol
