Toolnut started the thread RTV vs HPX and I sort of hi-jacked it by accident when I mentioned that I was in the same situation last year except that it was between the 700XP and the RTV. Since then some people have commented about the Ranger and I received a PM about my Ranger. Here is the low down after 48 hours on my Ranger.

I had a Gator 6X4 gas burner for about two years and I really worked it hard. I looked at the towing and hauling capabilities of the 700XP before I seriously considered it. I really like Deere and drove an HPX before I bought my Ranger. Maybe I drove a bad one, but the Gator had a rough ride to me. I think they stiffened the rear suspension in order for it to be able to haul a heavy load. The Ranger is very smooth. I have loaded dirt into the dump bed with my tractor to the point that it was coming over the sides and the Ranger carried it fine. It will squat the rear end down some, but not to the point where you can't drive it. The power dump is a linear actuator. I like the hydraulics on the RTV best, followed by the hydraulic over electric on the HPX. The linear actuator on my old Gator never gave me any problems and hopefully this one won't either. Like I said in my post, I had narrowed my search down to the 700XP and the Kubota. Had I felt that the Kubota would have been as fun in the woods and on the trail, I would probably bought it.

I can drive the Ranger the way I would drive a 4 wheeler. A big 4 wheeler! Polaris has some really nice add ons for the Ranger also. I have added the brush guard and Warn winch, and the power dump. I ordered the windshield and top for it, but they came in after I left for Iraq. When I get home, I am adding wheels and tires. One other thing I added was some extra lights up front. That is one thing I will ding Polaris on, the factory headlights are weak. I went to Wal Mart and bought some $20 halogen driving lights and mounted them on the brushguard. I was very pleased.

Polaris often gets knocked for it's reliability. So far in 50 hours, and I know that is not a lot, I have not had any problems. This is my second Polaris, the first was a 1995 Sport 400 with a 2 stroke. The only problem I had with it was the reverse limiter went out on it and that cost me about $75. It didn't bother me having a limitless reverse, the problem was the engine died when you put it in gear. Anyway, I think Polaris has come a long way. I don't think they are up there with Honda, Kaw, Yamaha yet, but I would consider them reliable. I did buy the extended warranty though. The reason was two fold; 1. I was going to be out of the country for a year and if something went wrong, I didn't want the dealership to BS my wife into spending unnecessary money to get it fixed. 2. I was able to get a 5 year extended warranty for $800. It covers everything, not just the engine, but suspension, bearings, drive shafts, etc. So when I get back I will be able to ride and use my Ranger without worrying about breaking it.

One last thing. Did I mention this thing would fly? 44 MPH.

them ranger's are nice machines. the funny thing about them are the guy who owns the property where i ride at showed up one day with his he has a ranger with the 499cc engine. and the whole conversation was about me telling him he had a nice machine and him saying no you got a nice machine and it kept on going back and forth.lol but he didn't have a 700xp and i new i could drag him. lol . them 700xp's are a diferent story. but them 700xp's are nice plenty or power really soft shocks .they are wide and can cross some really deep water without and mods to them .i did hear of some reliabilty issues when i was buying my hpx and that was one reason i didn't go with i ranger but from what i'm reading the problems are minor nuthing like the rhino's . every web sight you go to about them it's people listing of how to fix this or that. and not about where they rode at or what they done with them.to me rhino's/ prowler's have way to many how do you fix this threads floating around the internet. so lets see some pictures of your ranger in action !

Maybe I drove a bad one, but the Gator had a rough ride to me.

Anything in the bed will help take the edge off the ride even something like a bed liner will do the trick. But never will it be even close to what your ranger is like.

I like the hydraulics on the RTV best,

What do you mean by this ? Does your RTV have hydraulic hook ups ? That would be sweet.

I always hear about how many add ons you guys have compared to JD but JD has come a LONG way since I bought my 6x4 3 years ago. Although you guys still have a lot more I looked at them and didn't really find any interest in any aside from those snow tracks. Man they would be cool. I've seen a set for the gator but they're a couple grand. Ill buy tires before those.

i'm sorry but that ain't no mud hole.lol.and that hpx can haul alot more than that.they should have shown them at a side view.not to mention they had turf tires on that hpx . i bet if they had the regular 489's it would have went right through that hole.

I have almost 300 hours on my 1998 Ranger 6 x 6. Only repairs has been to replace the electric fuel pump. I have had the opportunity to operate my neighbors new Kubota RTV. It is built like a tank, but a couple things my neighbor and I agree are bothersome; 1) when you release the drive pedal (hydro) it stops immediately (better have your seatbelts on), and 2) noisy (we can carry on a conversation on my Ranger with the motor running, not with the RTV). However, power steering, diesel, hydraulic lift and turning radius are great.

For my needs; work, pleasure and hunting, the Ranger has been a great machine.

I was talking about th hydraulic dump bed on the RTV where as my Ranger has the linear actuator to dump the bed.

Tommyhxpx4x4,
I got a kick out of the mud hole test! Look how deep the left side line is that the gator (with turf tires, lol) or kubota goes in! Then, check out how little video is shown where the ranger goes, the mud never reaches the rim on the front wheel?
Crap, my rtv won't start at 20 below! lol!
I was impressed with the ground clearance on the ranger!

yea i have no dought that the ranger will out do my hpx in the mudd but man that mud test was completely botched . from the tires to the path they took.i mean nuthin could have made it though that mud with them golf cart tires on it!but they make sure the ranger had nice grippy tires. when they do test like that they should show them in the same tires and path.and i know for a fact that the ranger will not haul as much as my hpx thier shocks are to soft .just like the rhino's and the prowlers.the main haulers are the hpx /rtv/mule the other ones are for hunting and hauling semi heavy loads. did you notice when he was showing the ranger taking off with that load in the bed of turf stuff and the stuff atached to the side of the bed?well i bet that didn't weigh a 1000lbs and notice the rear a arms they are striaghtalmost bottomed out.i would like to see a ranger with a full rated load in it because i seen one with two 120 quart ice chest full of ice and drinks in the bed and it was pretty much bottomed out and that's about 500lbs maybe more. now i'm not bashing the ranger i'm just saying it won't haul a load like they say it would.
