Pumpkins, I'm not sure what I got myself into. For kicks I bought some giant pumpkin seeds. Possible mistake.

I haven't grown the giant ones but I've seen estimates where they say to give them like 2500 square feet per plant! Which is exactly why I have not tried them ;)

Should be interesting.

Get a receipt and you can take a tax deduction. I use the Plant A Row figure which was $1.50/lb last year. It is enough to pay for seed etc. depending on how much you give and how much you spend. I am not a tax expert but I will say that type of donation is a little gray for individuals... if you are a business it appears to be pretty straight forward.

Thanks Charlz!! Where can I find information on the "Plant A Row Figure"?

I usually google around for it come tax season. If you are doing it as a business then the IRS has a whole formula and everything on how to calculate the value for deduction.

The whole PAR thing seems a bit disjointed, I have thought about trying to build some community around it via a dedicated website (I have previous experience in that area) but I am not sure how much interest there would be. With food prices on the rise more and more people will be relying on the foodbanks so it would be a good time for gardners and farmers interested in helping out to have place to gather.

Ouch, my whole back yard!! I'll probably cut them if I have to, now I am training them to vine along the stone border. If the squirrels get another one I'm going to screen it. Interesting vine though, it's like a hollow hose!

Tried the giants one year and 3 pumpkins took over the whole raised bed. Think now of how to you are going to pick them up when they weigh over 200# and are fragile!

Most of the garden is planted, radishes, lettuce, carrots, and peas are up. Back pasture is planted and now hope for some rain to get it all going, and then fence off the back pasture from the cows and bulls and 6 new calves. Things are going great so far!!!!!!!!!!!!
