is there any difference, besides color, between the various plastic twines? I want to go to the local farm supply store and get plastic bailing twine to use as tomato twine. is it the same stuff? is it the same stuff that Lowes provides to tie down your stuff in the back of your pickup? it all looks the same to me.

Not at all the same but all kinds of thicknesses based on intended purpose and tensile strength. I use "round baler" twine that is 20,000 ft long. It's thin and strong. At the other end is 4,000 ft "square baler" twine that is super strong but thick and not needed for simple tasks.
Not the same as Lowe's--theirs appears to be much thinner but it would work for tomatoes. My wife uses strips of old cotton rags for tomatoes and we burn the vines and strips of cloth each fall.

the thickness is important since i am using trellis clips. does baler twine come in lengths < 20k'?

I bought some round baler twine at TSC recently and they stocked 3 weights from 110 to 140. I don't know what the numbers mean. I assume that you could tie a piece of it to a beam and suspend a weight of the rated number to it and it will hold.

I bought the 140 as I think it is what I bought in past years at other places but it is a bear to cut. Not sure a roll needs that tough of a twine. I guess the real merit in the tougher twine is if your roll sits out in the weather for a couple of years; may do a better job of resisting the effects of weather.

The round baler twine box is clearly marked and as sixdogs mentioned comes in 20,000 ft. I think the square baler twine is only 9000 ft (a lot thicker/heavier) and both are measurements of the contents of a 2 roll box of twine. I think I paid $72 for 2 boxes (4 rolls).

It's longer or shorter depending on the thickness, meaning tensile strength rating. It's only around $30 for two rolls and it's take it or leave it. It's cheap enough and you sould be surprised at the uses that invent themselves.

A buddy of mine with a horse boarding business gives me the twine off his square bales to use for pole bean supports and other garden uses. His trash; my treasure. You could probably pick up some used twine free from most anyone you know who uses hay.
