Went to buy seed potatos at the local Farmer's Coop in Middle Tennessee. Said they didn't have any and didn't know where to find any. Bummer....

Back in early March our local Rural King had several pallets each of red La Soda, Yukon Gold, and Kennebecs. I went back on the 18th and they still had a full pallet of Kennebec, one and a half pallets of La Sodas, and had been sold out of Yukon Gold for days, according to the guy that was working that area. He hinted that there was some kind of seed potato shortage this year.
I was able to buy 20 pounds of Yukon Gold seed potatoes at the local feed mill though, and I have those planted, along with 10 pounds of the La Sodas.

NBC nightly news had a story on last week about how the seed companies are doing brisk business and even running out of seeds. The company they were interviewing said they sold twice as many seed taters this year as last. And they were talking about pallets and TONS of taters sold.
As I have posted, I planted store bought red taters last november before I read that they won't work because they are treated and they came up. I planted about 3lbs and got a 5 gal bucket of them, probably 15-20 lbs.
If you haven't gotten your seeds yet you might want to do so, before they run short. A lot of people are getting serious about their gardens with the economy the way it is.

My BIL had the same situation in Cookeville, TN. We had to bring him "imported" seeds from Atlanta!

I was surprised to see seed potatoes at WalMart this year. They were asking about $5-6 for a 5lb bag. I already had mine so I didn't look real close, but they seemed to have a variety. I paid $2.50 for 5lb of a red variety I had never seen (and can't recall the name right now) and wish I'd found that place, a local seed and plant store, before I paid $5 for 5lb of Yukon Gold at my local Ac hardware. I planted one 50 foot row using leftover Kennebecs from last year....we'll see how that goes. If they do well, I'll save the little and weird shaped ones for seed.

When the economy is bad folks go back to the basics. One of them is growing the food that you are able to thus saving money at the grocery store.
Our 1st planting of potato last season lasted well into November. I have to tell you I kept hearing that fresh spuds tasted much better than those bought in stores but I was skeptical. I am now a believer, as they were the best we have ever eaten.
They were also very easy to maintain, grow, and harvest for that matter. Whenever we saw a potato bug we dropped him (or her) in a glass jar filled with a couple of inches of gasoline. They seemed to thin out real quick after that. Maybe the ones I didn't find heard their relatives hit the gas and decided to move on while they still could.

I have not had a problem finding seed potatoes in my area. Paid $20 for 50 lb. Bought 100# and got them in the ground last week. Was going to buy 300# but my wife talked me out of it...thought it would be better to see how these done this year since this is the first time we have planted on this property.
As to everyone growing a garden...there is nothing like sitting down at dinner and everything on the table being what you grew.
I told my wife the other day that I need to look at raising beef cattle again.

I just came back from WalMart. Was having some new tires put on the van and while that was being done I checked the garden center. One of the guys there told me the seed spuds were flying out the door this year. The only variety that they had left was Russet so I grabbed 2 bags while I could. Thanks for the heads up guys!

Thanks for the links. By the time I added shipping, 10 lbs was going to cost about $40. Think I will plant something else and buy potatoes from whoever ends up selling them at the Farmers market later.
