I visited with my friend over the weekend. The problem with his trailer is the axles. They are Chinese manufactured. He has to go back to PJ to order parts. He estimates he has pulled this trailer 7K miles. All four wheel hubs have failed twice. The hubs are so poorly machined that when they were assembled they used a punch to dimple them so the bearing races would stay put and not spin. He said the electro magnets are also weak. Brakes worked pretty good when new but consistantly got worse and now barely work. Yes, he's got good voltage going to them and his Big Tex trailer has awesome brakes when he pulls it with the same truck. He checked into buying Dexter axles to put under the PJ trailer and decided it wasn't cost effective. So it's for sale. But hey, it's got all new bearings and seals,,,,, for now at least.....![]()
Actually, for YEARS I had more warranty issues with Dexter axles than any other. We used to run Quality axles and now we are fortunate to have a good relationship with Axis, which makes the best axle on Earth, in my opinion and it is all Dexter interchangeable for when you do have a problem on the road. Sorry to hear about your troubles.
Not to change the subject to much, but there is Dexter axles and Dextar or Dexstar axles, I rememeber hearing about this before on here about Dexter axles, I have Dexter axles on my Longhorn trailer, but what ever issues any of you guys are having, I am all ears and eyes.
Mine, purchased last year, has Quality axles (5,200 lb).
Pretty much everything around here and I own has Al-Ko axles and I have had great luck with them. Yes, many of the bearings ect are Chinese but so are the replacements I get from Napa. I also have one tri-axle trailer with triple 6K Dexters under it and they have been good also.
Just because its Chinese does not mean its junk. They can build to any quality level. That is where the problem lies. They will and can build some of the finest products but they will and can also build junk. Its all what the specification of the business have items manufactured is.
