Sorry I was more or less at the origin of this controversy with the tactless pictures of the family on the tractor. I just thought they would look much better than myself.
Of course it was just a fun ride, the tractor was not used for any serious job, not even running in some cases. We are perfectly conscious of the danger involved and I rather tend to be over-cautious.
But we believe the best policy is education. We want our children acquainted with the machines from an early age and very clear as to what they can and can't do around or on the equipment.
That's the way my father taught me, the way my neighbours raise their kids, the way I taught my own children and am now teaching my grand children. They have all become tractor lovers.

I was surprised that nobody gave me a hard time about having what was then, my kids, on the fenders of the Duetz tractor, but I guess everybody knew it was staged, since I had my hands on the dogs, and not driving. However, I really was just driving with no hands, which was why the dogs needed holding, as they would sit there all day while the tractor wasn't moving, but the larger one would want to jump off if the tractor was moving and I wasn't holding him.

This is the second post I've regretted posting. Was super late at night and I posted without thinking about the consequences.

For the record, I gave the mini-boss a ride in the bucket. Is it dangerous, yes. Is letting her ride her quad dangerous, yup. Letting her ride her minibike with training wheels, yup. Letting her go sledding, yup. Swinging on the swingset, yup. Riding her bike, yup. Letting her go swiming, yup. Letting her do flips into the pool, yup. Letting her eat food that she can choke on like spagetti, yup (911 call on that one).

Not sure what the answer is. Do I want to hurt her, nope. Do I want her to have fun, yup. Do I want her to fear experiences, nope. Do I want her to be safe, yup.

I asked the moderator to delete my post but I guess that's not done, and probably defeats the purpose of an effective forum.

Am I as safe as I should be, nope. Do I always practice what I preach, nope.

Am I perfect, nope.

I do regret posting the personal photos, sorry for those I've gotten worked up.

Highspeed internet, in and of it's self is dangerous.

For the record the goose was cool.

The safety reminders are always appreciated. The personal attacks on my lack of intelligence not so much.

My take on the whole brouhaha???

The "safety police" at times go overboard..
That said, comments taking note of safety issues can be helpful. Calling someone stupid, or their actions stupid is not.

I remember sitting on the tractor with my grandfather when I young. We made one trip around the field and I was bored to tears. So I got off the tractor and walked the 1/2 mile back to the house. I might have been 5 at the time.

I dont have pictures of me on my tractor. Being single and all. Also my tractor isn't very photogenic, with the hood missing and things pretty rusty and all. But it runs and gets the job done.

You know what fellas, I think the good news is everybody is talking and thinking about it (the kids and tractors thing). I don't have kids, but I sure think it makes sense to be safe but not to over shelter them. My nieces and nephews are all city kids and just love visiting "uncle Jim's farm." I am super careful to be safe but we still ride the quad, canoe, take hay rides, shoot the pellet gun, pet the farm animals etc. I've let the older ones "use" the tractor (sit in the seat, drive a few feet forward and back, dump a bucket that I'd filled and lifted and with a million supervisors right by). The city and country are both so full of dangers, just different ones.

That said, we would never let the kids ride in the bucket. I could never live with an accident God forbid one happened. But I would not think twice about a few posed pictures.

More pics of you on tractors please!!:D:D

It's a rare moment! Normally I'm operating the camera but this time I needed to operate the tractor too so I handed the camera off to the Scout Master. We're helping with an Eagle Scout project in town. It will be a bandshell and we dug the holes for the posts with an auger I borrowed from a neighbor. The framing is now complete and ready for deck boards.

. I just thought they would look much better than myself.

Nothing against you or the great kids...but frankly you have me a little curious as to what the colored handles control and what appears to be mounted on the back left of the tractor. I bet a picture of it (with no people :) )posted to the Attachments discussion would be neat...
Have a great day

You have the answer: hydraulic hedge trimmer. I have about a kilometre of hedges of various types on my small property and my arms are no longer what they used to be! It's not very easy to use. You must find the right engine rpm that will give enough flow for the hydraulic engine without making the tractor too fast in A1. The long arm makes it very sensitive to any bump or hole in the ground and your reactions on the coloured handles (mine at least) often aren't quick enough. The branches are not as neatly cut as they are when you cut them by hand. The blade is 1.50 metre long and my hedges have grown up to 4 or 5 metres wide, so there are small problems in the center. But it does a very acceptable job and saves an enormous amount of time and effort. :)

I copied my post from the Massey Fergusson section and included it below. A couple of weeks ago I asked other members about GC2400, GC2600, and 1523 models and a couple of days ago I took delivery of the 1523 I talk a bit about. Havin fun!!

All,

I have had a special day today. I purchased a Massey Ferguson 1523 manual transmission tractor with a front-end loader and a 48" rotary cutter made by International World Agritech.

I don't know where to begin so:

I met Rodger Harrod, the owner of Georgia Deer Farm & Agri-Center, this morning at 9:30 at his business outside Carrollton, Georgia to finalize the purchase. He and his staff have been very helpful assisting me, answering my endless questions, and being very understanding of my major newbe status. I am fortunate, in that I was able to "shop all the brands" that I was interested in close to home. I said this before but, I looked at Kubota, John Deere, and Massey Ferguson before deciding, and ALL the dealers were very, very, very helpful. I can't say enough about customer service. I feel that many products today do not have the customer support that I have witnessed so for in my new interest. Certainly I may have missed features that are important to some people, but I took the knowledge I gained, weighed the plusses and minuses, then ignored all that and then just bought the really cool red one. (Wait a minute did I really say that?)

I fired her up this morning at about 11:00 and at first I felt pretty intimidated. After some time in the saddle I looked at the hour meter and it was at 2 hours. I meant to look earlier but my enthusiasm must have gotten the best of me so I don't know the actual start time today but some of the ticks on the clock I logged myself, searching for "the answer" in the Deer Farm parking lot. When I headed in for a shower, the meter said 8.2 (say what?). Unbelievable! My wife Tina said she thought maybe she was going to have to come out and drag me off the thing?

Photos below!!!!!

I'll reply back to the original thread..somehow I don't think I am going to be able to come up with 1 km of hedges to justify such a critter, but the drooling is fun:)

Sometimes the trailer hauls the tractor, and sometimes the tractor hauls the trailer. Notice the jacks on the trailer are down close to the ground just in case. I tried pulling the trailer with my B7800 the same way - worked, but was not stable with the weight on the 3-point. My L5740 handles it great. I also included a shot of the grill I put in our truck. I get a lot of comments on that too - lots of points from the wife.

Well said!
I agree 100%!

Safety has much more to do with the operator than any number of set ruels.... The rules are there to protect "everyone" and cover the manufactures interests. If I put my daughter on the tractor with me, that's my business. When she does ride, I'm extra, extra aware of everything that's going on. That's part of being a safe operator. Would it be safer to just tell her "no, stay away"? Yes, it would be (and there are plenty of times I do) but, it would also be safer to just leave the tractor in the barn to begin with. That way I could protect myself and property from any harm all together....

Tractors are equipment and not toys, yes, but you can also safely have fun around equipment with children. There are lots of limits to this. Like, not allowing it while you are trying to work efficiently and are concentrating on the job at hand. My children have been taught to "stay away" when daddy's working with equipment and if you have to come get me, stay where I can see you and get my attention before you come in close. This goes for all loud distracting equipment (tractors, mowers, excavator, chain saws, etc). But, in the "down time", why not let your child that's interested, get to know the equipment. It's my job to teach my children everything I can and everything they want to know. If you get them around equipment at an early age, they'll be hooked for life and learn how to operate efficiently and safely while respecting the equipment.

One of the things wrong with this country today is everyone wants to protect everyone else from everything.... Thanks for the concern big brother, but I can handle it myself. Now, if you want to keep your children, everything and everyone away from your tractor all the time, that's fine for you, but don't tell me how to operate and/or raise my children. Calling people stupid, just won't get you anywhere....

Very well put!
