Most pickups nowadays are fleetsides and not stepsides. Therefore, the 48" width limitation is pretty much at the wheelwells. In fact, every pickup that I've ever owned had at least a little bit of room remaining between the wheelwells, probably 3 or 4" after laying the 4' x 8' sheets on the bed. If the tractor were to go in nose first, the mower at 54" will probably clear the sides, which is probably closer to 60" but the tailgate might need to remain down to clear. I wouldn't suggest anything less than a 1 ton truck for this endeavor. Obviously, a trailer will make loading and unloading infinitely easier, but driving 800 miles (with stops in between) will be much easier without a trailer, which greatly reduces the number of places you can stop at and find adequate parking.
