My grandpa and I just picked up a used JD 2240 2WD with a 520 loader. Any tips or tricks you could share would be appreciated. We can't figure out what the yellow lever between the shifters does. We will be using the tractor for haying a dozen acres, blowing snow and other chores.
The tractor is very clean and has around 2000 hours on it.

It doesn't make the pto engage. Only the foot lever engages the pto.

Cool. I had a 2840 that had a yellow lever between the shifts that engaged the pto when lifted. The foot lever on the 2840 controlled the diff lock. My mistake.

That is one "cherry" looking 2240!! Congrats! I wanna think that the yellow lever is the Park engagement lever.

Is tractor serial number above or below 350,000? If the lever you refer to is similar to parts photo that is for hyd ind pto

I guess the 2240 is not the same as the 2640.. The pto lever is down next to your left heel - IIRC.

That all depends on the pto option. JD offered dual stage clutch called continuous pto or hyd ind pto. Both options had a disconnect lever that would be by left heel of operator while sitting in the seat. Hyd ind pto had control valve lever between the 2 gear shift levers on open station tractors. Mid pto had another lever(2 total) very similar to the lever in parts photo.

I have attached a photo of the lever. The serial number plate is not accessible because the loader blocks it. I think the tractor was made in 1980.

Photo didn't work the first time.

As others have stated it's for the PTO
Lever on the side moves a collar that connects the PTO shaft internally. Yellow lever is valve for hydraulic clutch pack of PTO.
Tips; grease the front axle often, especially the bellcrank for the two tierods. That's where all the steering slop is in my 2030.
Check the wheel and loader mounting bolts, keep them tight.
Don't run it out of fuel.
Keep a fuel filter on hand, never know when you will need it.

Nice tractor, enjoy! :drink:

To access battery do you open a metal door or 2 fiberglass halves?

According to the style of the hood in the pictures, you have a pre - 350,000 serial number. It would have been built between 1976 and 1979. As stated by others, the lever by your left foot mechanically engages the rear pto shaft to the hydraulic clutch. The yellow knob between the shift levers engages the hydraulic clutch when lifted up. Most people tend to leave the lever by your foot engaged all the time and start and stop the pto using the yellow knob. One advantage to the lever is when you disengage it, you can turn the shaft freely for aligning the splines when connecting an implement. If the shaft will not stop when the lever by your foot is engaged and the yellow knob is down, you likely have a bad pto brake or a broken oil line inside the transmission that engages the brake. BTW, nice looking tractor! you should get good service out of it.

We only have one problem. When backing the tractor off the trailer, the left shift lever pulled completely out of the transmission. It appears that the star shaped snap ring was broken and I found the large part of it next to the shifter. Will have to wait until Monday to get a new ring.

Check for missing shims key 12 & 13, (3 of each) plus the bearing key 14. You may need more than the snap ring.

Also if your shift boots have any cracks or tears replace them now. This is the main way water gets into the transmission fluid.

12 and 13 are missing. All that I could find is the pictured clip and #14.

Picked up the kit (RE18116) and installed it today. The instructions were very helpful and I had to grind and file down the collar/bearing to make up for the cover wear and the resulting vertical play. Ended up using 4 of the shims and the tractor seems to be shifting fine now.

Put her to the test this afternoon. Tractor worked great. Probably the first time our JD bailer has been hitched to a JD.
