I know this question is out of season but I was curious if any of you horse owners use a landscape rake to bust up the piles in the summer?

I use mine, I usually turn it around backward so it doesnt tear the grass up too bad. I also pull a chain harrow behind, to break the piles up even more.

I use a chain harrow with the least aggressive setting. The landscape rake tends to tear out more grass for me. Never tried the landscape rake backwards though.

I used a chain link fence hooked to a telephone pole with a chain to the tractor.

You could probably accomplish the same thing by leaving the landscape rake by the shed and pulling the chain harrow alone.

I pick mine up with a manure rake then compost it. Then spread it once it is composted 6+ months. Pr gie to neighbors.

I know...****!!

We scoop ours daily, keeps the mess down, the neigbours happy, manure pile full.

That said, as i add another much larger pasture next spring, we wont be able to scoop that as frequently, so we'll use the diamond drag harrow to break it up and dry it out. At least that's the plan, my wife is pretty picky about that stuff, so Id bet by bottom $ she'll be out there scooping it up anyway.

I use the backward landscape rake approach. I have about 3 acres of pasture, and it does a good job at breaking up the big piles and spreading it out...after running the field and a rain, you can barely tell horses were on it.

The backwards landscape rake also works will to work pasture seed into fresh earth.

Chain Harrow - I like to use it in the aggressive mode (teeth forward) - do it two three times a year when it is hot and dry. It is not practical for most people to pick up the poop when you have a lot of acreage ( We have 11 acres of pasture).

I'm too lazy (and the wife doesn't pay enough) to pick the manure up out of my two horse pastures. I use a chain harrow set on the aggressive side in the pastures (seems to work better in taller grass). I drag once a month after the horses have been moved to the other pasture.
