Just picked up a HF parts washer. The 20gal tub with a pump. What do you guys use in your washers? I was going to get K1 kerosene, or just diesel. Any thoughts?

Thanks
Brian

I believe those pumps are only for water based cleaners

Yes, do check the specs for your pump. It may not handle hydrocarbon solvents. What you use will depend on what you're cleaning and whether it will be painted afterward. K1 and diesel are way too "oily" for my liking. You'll have to wash the parts after cleaning if you intend to paint them.

I used to use Graymills Regular Agitene solvent, but it got so pricy I started mixing my own. I use a mix of 90/10 naphtha and paint thinner (mineral spirits). The paint thinner raises the flash temperature without making it too oily or leaving a residue. Even that's getting expensive these days. I've been using that in an old Graymills drum mount cleaner for years.

I'm running Stoddard in mine. Many years ago there was a Shell distributor up in Woodburn that had it on a pump for like $1.53 a gallon. Took two 15 gallon plastic drums up. Wish that still existed.

Diesel leaves an oily film behind, I don't want that on some parts that I wash.

I have mineral spirits in mine.

Stoddard solvent or paint thinner.
Stoddard solvent is basically dry cleaning solution aka gasoline and de-greasing soap.

The formula is linked to heavy cancer progression, so use it wisely.

I only use Seafoam or Simple Green in my HF ultrasonic cleaner.

Found that mineral spirits (aka paint thinner) followed by straight Simple Green (biodegradable) makes excellent cleaner IF you don't have "parts washer"...

The TS solvent is all Ive used: PCS1000
It cleans well and no
problems with the pump..

PSC 1000 works great, I have used it for years without problem in the small 3.5 gal HF bench top parts washer (they don't seem to sell that anymore but you can still get one from other sources like Amazon)

Just as an FYI I added a SS band clamp to hold the filter screen in tight originally it was just a press fit and came loose

I haven’t bought any in awhile.. I buy 2 & 3 pails at a time to keep my tank topped off..
My TS store never have/had it in stock so I’d order it online and have it delivered to the store and drive to pick it up..
Are u for sure they stopped selling it.??

As far as the filter goes, I took a whole Scotch Brite pad and took 4 “bread ties” (wire) and weaved it to the OUTSIDE of the filter box..
That way I could catch anything that might make it thru to the inside filter..

I have enough trouble getting rid of used oil and UTF, how do you dispose of the used solvent ? Safety Kleen ?

Interesting question. Here are others wrestling with the same problem.

And the last one. Look at the costs of having a parts cleaner.

Idk if it’s the formula or what but the solids seem to collect on the bottom of the tank and don’t stay suspended, making for easy cleaning..
And yes, it does evaporate..
My washer has a lid and I keep it closed unless I’m using it.. AND I went around the inside seam of the lid with door/window weatherstripping.. THAT slowed the evaporation process down A LOT…
