I agree.
Take it in before it eventually comes to your back door, making that heart-wrenching pallet noise that we're all familiar with.

I carefully removed the nails and burned it, in case it was carrying disease!

How did you dispose of the nails ?? Nails could be diseased too.

Well, you were the 'man on the spot' and made the best decision possible under the circumstances. Humanely done.
Other than dry-rot or rusty-nail, Australia is free of harmful pallet specific diseases. Is this the same for other countries?

Crickey, that simply reminds me of the 1970's craze of remodelling the 'rec room' with weathered wood from sheds/barns. If I recall, whole structures were stripped to skeletons (frames) to feed the obsession.
