Anyone have solutions for keeping rats out of the cab or from getting under hood and building nests?

I'll be following this thread for an answer myself. They will totally cover the motors and chew the wires. A yard cat is the only thing that has ever worked for me and I don't like cats. They spray everything or have kittens all the time. The last time I drove my old dodge, I noticed a strange smell and I opened the hood when I got home and there was a rat on the exhaust manifold. It was smoking.

I don't know about the cab because I don't have one. But I've tried mothballs and traps for under the hood and they didn't work. What worked best for me was to keep the hood up and open. I haven't found a single chewed wire or nest since doing that. I think they don't like the feeling of being exposed to the open.

I have heard of a can of human urine does the trick but my metal can rusted? I will try a plastic container next ! it did seem to work till the can puked though.
If it works, it's worth it !! :D

Buy a bag of those green "RAT PELLETS;" they are the size of M & M's, but are round. They will cure the rat's appetite permantely. I put them on the ridge of my JD's valve cover, and haven't had any problems for a few years?

Throw a bag of rat poison in the cab , And over winter in the shop i leave the doors open on the combines so the cats can sleep in them .

I feed my rats John Deere green pellets. I haven't seen the M&M size but will check the next time I visit the granary. I go through around 10 packages of the pellets a year but only find a few bodies. Must be the critters go somewhere else to die.

The poison I was told makes the rodents thirsty, and they head for water?

Rats and mice do not appear to like the smell of spearmint, but it does not appear to stop them for long. Machmeter62 is correct about most of those poisons (Coumodin/warfarin). Cats work best for all their pro's and con's (I have one.). Jay

Try one of those newfangled ball bearing mouse traps, as in Tom Katt :)

Trouble with rat poision is that it is not target specific & I would never - ever use or keep M&M size poision where children (or chocoholics) might find it.

Just my 2 cents.

Is this what you would call "terminal constipation"?

Get a cat...

A female cat as they are most often better hunters. Have her fixed and she will not spray or have kittens... She will bring you dead rats and mice for your veiwing pleasure.....

If you don't like cats... Get a Jack Russell Terrier.... They'll catch the rats...

Terriers have been bread for hundreds of years as rat killers... That is their whole reason for existance...

Chris

If your machine is outside, I don't have a good solution.
If it is inside, and you have electric outlets try the Sonic Blaster type of devices.

They work better as a repellant, and less effective if you already are infested.

My last house was 50 years old, had two crawlspaces. I trapped all the critters I could, then placed the Sonic repellers in the crawlspaces, they worked.

FastFwd: Built my pole building almost 4 years ago, bought a box of 3 Sonic repellers, placed them at opposite ends of the building. So far, so good.
Proof? well, the best i can offer is that I left a partial bag of grass seed out, in the open. It stayed there for 4 to 6 months, nothing ever touched it.
My shop is next to many acres of woods and field, so, if they were going to come in, they don't have to go far.

Warfarin -- usually found under the D-con label -- is specific to rats and mice. A dog or cat would have to consume several times it's body weight in dead vermin to begin showing the effects of warfarin. A kid would have to eat several pounds of the little green pellets.

Moth flakes and moth balls are not the same stuff. One is paradichlorobenzene and the other is naphthalene. I don't recall offhand which is which, but if one doesn't work, try the other or both. I've always had good luck with mothballs. They work on squirrels, chipmunks, and 'coons too.
