I wheeled out my oxy-acetylene cart and opened the oxygen tank valve and the relief valve immediately opened. Did it repeatedly. Is wiser to repair/replace the relief valve or just buy a new one? It is a Victor Equip Co. unit.

You should take it to a gas supplier and have it rebuilt. BTW,where did you see "regulator relief valves" for sale? I didn't know there was such thing.

Just curious, but what does a relief valve downstream of the shutoff valve do (i.e. what does it provide "relief" to)?

I saw "regulator relief valve parts" on a search but never a supplier.????

The relief valve relieves excess oxygen pressure as a safety precaution. Mine is obviously defective - failed abruptly.

The supply shop should beg able to get you a ball park figure to repair them. It’s usually well worth the effort.

You might have a piece of trash stuck in your high pressure inlet valve. ( it's the center part inside your regulator that the diaphragm and spring pushes against.) The pressure climbs until it vents. Eventually, your diaphragm will rip. I guess you have real victor and not the economy line?

Does your nipples have the porous brass filter on the id? I crack the cylinder valve to blow dust away before mounting my regulator. The little viton seals eventually wear. It may just be time to rebuild.

most of the ones I have looked at replacement is usually faster and easier, and the cost is not that much more, for many regulators,

If he has a reseating pressure relief, he bought the premium stuff like SR450D. Expensive and worth rebuilding.

Mine is a Victor SR250C. I saw a Utube video of someone installing a repair kit on the exact model so I purchased the kit. Hope it is worth the effort.

Doubt that the diaphragm has failed. I'd say the needle and seat is stuck. Simple to pull the bonnet off of the reg and have a look. Not much in there. Rebuild will be about $90. You can buy a descent reg for 1/2 that and it will still last 15 years or more.

Good regulator. Its rubber diaphragm fails about every seven years or so. Rebuilds are about $45. Parts less labor are half that.

Make certain no oil of any form touches your oxygen reg. (Latent heat of compression + high pressure pure oxygen = a powerful, one time example of "dieseling") Always stand out of the path of your pressure adjusting screw.
