Tiller Other tiller uses

I have a 4' Massey Ferguson tiller that does a fine job in the garden and for creating planting beds.

I am thinking about using the tiller as my road finisher in and around the woods.

I typically use the FEL for brush and small tree removal when cutting in a woods road. Usually the road will be less than flat and smooth. I don't have a box blade.

What about using my tiller to loosen and level the actual roadway. There are no stumps, as I dig everything out. Maybe a rock here and there, but I find them in the gardens also.

Any thoughts?

It would probalbly level it out pretty well but you will be left with a (tilled garden) for a road. This would not be good if it rained. I would go back and either spread gravel on it or seed it with a waterway grass mixture then roll it with a lawn roller and keep it mowed. In a year or two it will be a nice road.

i wouldnt till something that i want to be a hard surface. tilling just incorporates air into the soil. it also leads to erosion.

I have one of those old highly-used Yanmar tillers with the gauge wheels and have set it to just skim the surface. If you can do something like that with or without wheels, I think it would work good.

A shallow till could work, but I agee with the other posts if you till too deep. Living in upstate NY you probably have quite a few "just below the surface surprises " ! I tried the shallow till technique on my property (western MA/Berkshires) when trying to extend a couple of my paths. I aborted the attempt before I seriously damaged the tiller . Jay
