I have had 2 hoses made at O'Reilly and am having massive sticker shock, wondering if they are intentionally fleecing me. The last one - 8' of 3/8" with 2 JIC fittings was $152. Does that sound right?

I was looking on Tractor Supply's website and I can buy an 8' section of 3/8" hydraulic hose with male NPT ends for $35, and two 3/8" female pipe x 3/8" female JIC swivel fittings for $20, totaling $55+ tax. I wanted to get some opinions. I did not realize I could get it from Tractor Supply until after I bought it and installed it.

Look for a hydraulic hose shop in your area. They can custom make hoses with fixed, instead of swivel ends, pretty inexpensively. My local guy even made a 50’ replacement air hose for my shop with goodyear rubber cheaper than Home Depot chinese hose.

$152. Does that sound right? Not really, but it seems some places charge whatever they want for making hoses these days. I've been charged $80 for a 1/2" hose 18 inches long (with metric hose ends). I've used TSC for ready-mades on occasion when budget for the project justified it. Biggest problem I have with that is they only stock a maximum of two of anything. If you need three or four hoses you have to drive to another store in another town.

I have also learned that lesson the expensive hard way twice ! Hydraulic hose prices at different places can vary a lot .

I've always thought of O'reilly as an an Auto parts store with higher prices. I assume the hydraulic hoses you needed connect to a Tractor so it would be logical to look at TSC first. I had some custom hydraulic hoses made at an Ag equipment dealer closer than town and they also must be made out of gold at their prices.

Yeah, but air hose fittings are a lot different than hydraulic fittings. By about 15,000psi. I make my own air hoses as well. Mostly for short runs between machines with tees and blow guns. I have a crimper and box full of fittings and crimp sleeves for various sizes of rubber hose. The fittings are brass.

The Goodyear air hose is one of the worst I've experienced. It rots and cracks on the reel. It's probably made overseas too. The best hose I've found for inside shop use is the black rubber hose at Harbor Freight. It has lasted the longest. For outside hose, the blue vinyl coated hose. I've got a couple of 50 footers that are over 10 years old. And they live outside.

I've been fleeced by the local auto parts stores on hydraulic hoses in the past, when I had to get the tractor going NOW. When I can catch hoses getting in rough shape as I did just this past week when I rebuilt my toplink cylinder I order from Surplus Center. I ordered the 2 toplink hoses and they were only $9.55 each - 1/2"x 24"x 1/2" NPTM. Shipping sucks but was not over the top. Probably would have cost me 3 - 4 times as much to get them locally. Fortunately I caught the old ones before any leakage.

You might get a hydraulic hose made a bit cheaper at a hydraulic shop, but most of them keep Monday to Friday operations and 8:00 - 5:00 hours.

So if you need to have a hose made after hours or weekend you stuck with who’s open.

If you need a hose with 90 degree swivel fittings, specific length or non pipe threads then you are out of luck at TSC for the most part.

It costs a bunch to stock all the fittings needed to make hoses and may not sell them regularly.

Also now most places are tacking on a labor fee to make hoses.

If you know exactly what you need for hose size, fittings, and length, @kennyd at BoltOn Hooks will make them for you at reasonable prices, great quality, and will have them to you fairly quickly (although I see you are on the other side of the country).

Fortunately there's a REAL hardware store about 1/2 hour away. When I was plumbing the snow plow lines they made up two hydraulic hoses in their service department in about 10 minutes. I forget the cost, but remember it was very reasonable.
