Tractor
Yanmar
Hello all, my question is if I order a tractor from my local dealership would the price still be able to be negotiable or would I be stuck paying MSRP with whatever financial incentives they may have?

My local dealership doesn't have a SA223 but I have a build I've put together online and would like to just take to them as it sounds like it works the same as an order form.

Any help is appreciated!

While dealers prefer to sell inventory off of their lot, they make money by selling (and later repairing/supplying) tractors.

The economy is sagging, so many need to move inventory. They will probably negotiate, but not as deeply as they would with aging inventory.

The only caveat would be if Yanmar has low inventory of what you want. Your dealer may have trouble getting a some models. That gives them leverage (mostly, they will try to get you to switch models).

I love Yanmars machines, but tractors are a side-hustle for them. They don't build as many as they could. For them, resources are better invested in other lines(mostly marine engines).

Rather than ordering; have you simply checked maybe every Yanmar dealer within 150 mile radius for their inventory. If there are any discounts, it's going to be on sitting idle inventory; not a fresh drop order. Machine of that can be trailed with a small SUV/mini can on a single axle trailer.

I certainly can find that model at dealerships within a hundred mile radius, my only hesitancy in doing so is horror stories I've read of others buying from other dealerships either not local or out of state and then finding out their local dealer won't service warranty work as it wasn't purchased directly from them.

I don't know if my local dealership would be this way but I'd hate to buy and then find that out. I wouldn't understand that if they did because I'd still be coming to them for advanced service beyond routine maintenance and possible accessories/implements beyond that initial purchase. I do recall them posting a "we service what we sell" tag line on the end of one of their equipment ads but..that can go both ways lol.

I've noticed this lol. I seriously fell for Yanmar after looking more into them, I was incredibly disheartened though when I went to YouTube and discovered entire libraries dedicated to "other" tractor brands and basically like 20 videos on modern Yanmars in the wild lol

Even tractor engines are not their major business. Yes, they make engines for many other brands.

I dont think that is a legit worry. If you moved, or bought a different dealers machine, or a used machine, it's work for the dealer. It's also not the dealer providing the warranty, it's the manufacturer. Maybe if you bought direct, they could do something like offer free pick up for the warranty work; but we are talking about a 2500 lbs machine; we can tow that with a Crown Vic or a Chrysler Pacifica

Walk in and talk to them, they will be below MSRP.

Yanmar is growing around here. I think they see the market opportunity for small tractor sales.

If you worry that a Yanmar dealer wouldn't perform warranty work on a Yanmar tractor then you need to look at another brand/dealer or both. This was an issue for a particular brand of RV's the problem was that dealer service departments were being swamped with "warranty" repairs, most of which were attributable to bad design, sloppy production, and bad QA. As a result, some dealers sent folks back to the factory rather than deal with warranty issues. Tales of 6-9 month waits to get in at the factory were not unusual.

When you were speaking of videos, the Yanmar Academy has several on YouTube:

As for warranty work, if a dealer turns you down for warranty work, contact Yanmar. They should support the brand they sell regardless of whether they sold it or not.

Dealerships aren't doing warranty work for free; they are being paid by the parent brand. I don't "think" it's at a reduced labor rate like car dealers, but I could be mistaken.

I called my dealer, said he didn't have one in stock, TYM 4820h. Asked me what options I wanted, said he would have it in two weeks.
Two weeks later I had a tractor for the price we talked about. Didn't pay a dime until I pulled it into my barn. Its a pretty simple process

When I was looking at new tractors years ago, I had a dealer about 60 miles from me quote a Kubota. When I went to my local Kubota dealer with the price, he was none too happy that the other dealer gave me a quote. Saying so n so knows better and that I was in his territory.

When I cross shop dealerships, I never show them a quote I got from any other dealer. If they were good enough to give me a discounted price, I really don,t want another dealer to just match it. What it does do is gives me a good ballpark idea of how much I should be able to get it for, IF a dealer really wants to sell me the particular item.

Having worked around contracting my entire life; I view this whole shopping thing like an RFP "Request for Proposal" or an Invitation to Bid. Bring me a bottom line best first offer, and I'll pick the best value from multiple bids. I know that's not how most dealers, but it really should be

Talk to the dealer. See what his pricing would be if you ordered. A lot of times they need a certain $ level for ordering and if you can wait and they can put an order together that helps both of you. Or possibly he has something to trade the other dealer to get what you want and the Yanmar rep may swap them around to be a good rep.
