Open Carry

it can deter or can cause you to be ambushed and disarmed because you are the first threat they see. It all depends if your in the way of what they came to do.

Well, do you have any stories of something like you describe actually happening? We have plenty of open carriers here in GA and I have never heard of anyone being targeted because of such practice.....except by certain police agencies.

I saw my county sheriff openly carry while in a store. He did have his badge displayed next to his holster.:laughing::laughing:

Other than him, I have only seen a woman walking alone on a rural road openly carrying. Some places in NC this would be a problem because of local regulations.

Later,
Dan

Come to think if it a neighbor lady open carried all the time as she walked on the county roads for exercise. I never thought too much about it. Of course she was not in a municipality, so it was perfectly legal. And of course I open carried all the time while hunting. But that's not the same as going into town.

I'll just say I agree and have said so...The only reason I can see why someone would openly carry a sidearm into a store like Walmart or down the street or anywhere in public would be to draw attention to themselves...It must give them some sort of Macho feeling....I think it sets them up as a target for any bad guys out there...Think about it...If you are a bad guy up to no good and you see some guy carrying a gun....Who are you going to take out first...?

Because it is so rare to open carry many folks seeing someone with a gun, call the police...I think some of the open carry folks are looking for a confrontation with the police...I say this because on gun blogs I have read their posts .:2cents:

1) I'm not a big guy - the only way I can carry a decent pistol is openly or wear baggy clothes. Otherwise I'm stuck with something small and difficult to handle like a Seecamp.

2) If you're a "bad guy" are you going to mug a woman walking openly with a pistol or a woman with a purse that may or may not have a pistol?

3) Texas laws suck for open carry. Only government goons may open carry here. At least I can carry when I travel in my car though.

4) I wouldn't want attention - I just want to be left alone. An armed society is a polite society (Robert Heinlein).

That is stupid. The guy films this and says nothing to the guy even thou the kid has the gun. Too bad the cameraman didn't get it.

yeah but even babies are taking guns and shooting the gun owner.

Here's the Texas situation:
Q: Can I carry a firearm on my person?

A: Yes, with proper licensing (Concealed Handgun License) you may carry a pistol or revolver on your person so long as it remains concealed. Long guns (rifles / shotguns) do not have to be concealed, but must be carried in a manner not calculated to cause alarm, and do not require a license.

Q: Can I strap a gun on my hip in Texas?

A: No, with some exceptions. Open carry is not legal in Texas, but you may open carry on your own property, in the commission of a sporting activity (competition, shooting ranges, etc.), and while engaged in hunting.

Q: Can I carry a firearm in my vehicle?

A: Yes. With the passage of the Motorist Protection Act you may now readibly carry handguns, loaded and within reach, so long as you conceal the firearm. Long guns (rifles / shotguns) do not have to be concealed and may be loaded and within reach.

Chris, here is an article in the Lancaster paper about open carry from a few years ago. Pat Miller is a local guy who was interviewed for the article. He open carries just about everywhere. The only good reason I can think of to carry open would be to use a gun that is not easily concealable. I have a sig p229 that never leaves the house because its just too big to conceal. I would love to open carry with it, but it's not my style, prefer to carry concealed.
