On road diesel vs off road NO 2 red

The late E85 bobcat machines take the same fuel filter as my Toolcat. The older ones had a 10 micron filter while the new ones are a 1 or 2 micron filter.....way finer. I cut my filter apart this winter when I changed it out (500hr).

Do we know all stations filter both exactly the same ??? Types of filters all the same or up to station ??? Change intervals of filters is there a guide line or up to fuel station ???
We only installed 2 different filters for all pumps. Now there is one for all fuels. But it is up to the station to change them out. Some stations are good about changing filters - some wait till its clogged up and slowing or stopping the pump.

The down time I lost getting water in off road diesel road diesel was a no brainer !!! .............
Don't need that hassle. I don't go through much fuel at all so far. Only purchase 3 gallons in a 5 gal can adding 1oz treatment at a time. So with a 6 gal tank at the half full mark I fill up.

Might want to keep in mind that if you live up north heating oil may not contain any anti-gel as the tanks are kept inside the house. Around here there's "off road diesel" and "heating oil". I always add something like Power Service to bump up the anti-gelling performance so I've never had a problem. I've also never had a problem with water. My guess is it's the station you are buying it at.

Decades ago a local garage was caught dumping used engine oil into their gas tanks to get rid of it. The owner just assumed the tank was big enough so it would dilute and nobody would know. What got him was one of the tanks was low and with modern cars with computers which pick up on misfires it didn't take long before multiple people were complaining. That's an extreme case but poor practices or not so great equipment could easily cause issues like excessive water getting into their tank. I would think that a diesel pump at a station would have a water separator but I guess it's more profitable to sell that water to a customer than remove it.

I keep about 15 gallons of diesel on hand, one diesel tractor does not burn all that much. I get fuel at a truck stop to get the freshest fuel possible and add my own treatment. The local that sells off road fuel is higher than the truck stop, so why pay extra for red dye plus they do not have the fuel turn over, not that I am that worried about diesel fuel going bad but I am concerned about water and their tanks are above ground.

How cold was it when you used the off-road? Did you try mixing it with diesel fuel additive.
We have a problem with the diesel gelling when it gets cold, like -39 below zero cold.
Other than that I've never had a concern with off-road.

It’s the same stuff!

In fact, many, if not most most places also sell off road as furnace fuel. Mine does. Check with your distributor.

Fifteen years ago there was a difference between on road, off road, and heating fuels, but emission laws and economy of scaled have resulted in the refineries and wholesale distributors streamlining things. Some for legal reasons, and some for economic reasons.

Never changing a filter in 9 years raises an eyebrow to me.

I change the fuel filters every fall before it gets cold. I'm using highway fuel off of my semi truck. Towards fall, I run the tractor quite low on fuel. After we had the first cold snaps, and the diesel comes out white from the nozzlel, I fill up the tractor. Yes, I do notice a change in the bio diesel mixture. Never had a problem with fuel gelling in the tractor and that sits outside all year long.

The filters in the semi are changed every 25000 miles.

We own a fuel distribution business. Ultra low sulphur off road and highway diesel is the same here. The red dye is injected in the loading head at the refinery as the truck is being loaded.

Question if I may.... if you load a delivery truck with 'plain' diesel, then inject the red dye.... do you reuse that same truck for more red deliveries? The next time you fill that truck, does any residual dye tint the new load?

I'm really just curious as to how persistent the red dye is, if at all.
