On road diesel vs off road NO 2 red

Question if I may.... if you load a delivery truck with 'plain' diesel, then inject the red dye.... do you reuse that same truck for more red deliveries? The next time you fill that truck, does any residual dye tint the new load?

I'm really just curious as to how persistent the red dye is, if at all.
Yes. Same truck would haul gas, diesel, k1, bio, whatever. When you get back to terminal, do a drain down and what ever may be left wont make any difference since we are talking thousands of gallons.

My fuel hub dies there own diesel.

They buy clear fuel by the tanker full couple times a week, haul it to there hub and die the fuel as its getting transfered into there holding tanks.

Same fuel as the 'on-road' just has die mixed in. Other than the die, zero difference.

Residual isn’t a problem in the truck compartments themselves. They are designed with a taper to the sump area and usually clean out very well. As tib stated you are talking very trace amounts getting diluted with large quantities of the next product.
Where you may run into issues is on small deliveries such as is common with bob tail trucks. If the driver fails to clean out his hose reel full of dyed diesel and pushes that out into a 280 gallon clear (hwy) diesel tank then you may see a trace of dye. But even then it takes quite a bit. Our hose capacities are 15-25 gallons depending on truck.
Most newer delivery trucks have two pumps. One dedicated for gas and one diesel. Transports (tractor trailers) typically gravity drop fuel into underground tanks and dont usually have the same risk of a full hose of leftover product as do bob tails with reels and a meter.

Hope that answers your question.

Read that Texas Authorites are forgiving Dyed Diesel in Road Vehicles during this emergency . How Generous!

Growing up on blue berry farm and working on fairly large cranberry farm 20+yrs off road was standard for price and was allowed for farmers !! Now retired in Western NC off road not real easy to find but I did find some near me.I have a L4701 when I first purchased I put road diesel in tractor then I started with off road but it noticed tractor regeneration was more often ?? Then I rented small excavator I put off road in it was loaded with water.Service tech from Sun Belt told me road diesel was filtered more than off road not just dye.I’m using On Road from now on and Kubota fuel additive. Just curious on others experiences and opinions ??

There is still one station here locally that sells off-road diesel. But like you, I choose to run on-road diesel in my tractor. Reason being: it's fresher and better filtered. And I can fill my truck and diesel jugs at the same time. And, on-road diesel is "winterized" at the refinery during the cold weather months.

I'll agree that it may be fresher, but otherwise as has been said by various people in this thread there is (in this day and age) no difference between on road and off-road #2 Diesel other than the dye. It comes out of the same tank at the refinery and there they add dye or not. A tier 4 on road and off-road engine need the same quality fuel so there is no difference between on-road and off-road #2 diesel.

Have a friend who is the maintenance guy at Seattle's fuel tank farm downtown.
when a tanker truck comes in for off road diesel the fuel is loaded and the dye added as it fills. Same as on-road diesel but colored.

In MN the off-road diesel is winter blend as well once November rolls around.

To clarify, as I understand. Please correct if wrong:
On road is same as off road, except off road is dyed to signify taxes haven’t been collected in it.
Some stations may blend #1 and #2 in winter (or use additives?) to decrease cloud point and gelling in cold temps. They are not always consistent, or treated for the current temps, buyer beware.

But what about:

Heating fuel oil: Is this the same as diesel? Is it #2 (dyed) or a mix or #1 and #2, or just #1 if you request and have an outside tank? Does it have same lubricity as “diesel” for vehicles?

Kerosene: Is this the same a #1 diesel? Smell the same when burnt in a heater?

My understanding is #1 has less lubricity than #2.

Around here on-road and off-road diesel both get winterized. Heating oil may not. Both heating oil and off road diesel have red dye in them. Kerosine may have red dye in it or it could be clear (also for tax purposes). Kerosine doesn't need to be winterized and is often used for heating when the storage tank is outside.
