Many systems do it that way with no problems.

I might try it. would be easy to do, just add a jumper wire once I find the right wire to connect to.

Depending on how the starter is made you may not need to "find a wire". You can "double up" on the signal wire to starter, or maybe if it has a two post solenoid attach a wire to bottom post that sends power into the motor brushes. I've seen it done that way.

OK, without a wiring diagram, I'll just have to look and find what's the best approach. Thanks for the ideas.

Well, the new timing relay didn't fix it. I'm thinking there's some corrosion in a connector or something cutting down the voltage to the solenoid. Without a wiring and connector location diagram, I don't know where the involved connectors are. Recent shoulder surgery prevents me from crawling under and blindly poking around, so I did the bypass I talked about, Installed a push button connected to power and the pull in wire. It works great, turn the key on, bump the new button, the solenoid snaps in, and then start as normal. Not a true repair, but it works fine. Thanks everyone for all the info.

I'm always in favor of a creative workaround to help beat the system. Been there, done that, more times than I care to count.
