Old Lumber

Hey... you tryin' to sneak "something you don't know" into "old lumber"?

Interesting history, tho!

I was just responding to your thoughts on what is considered old in terms of US communities. But on the subject of old lumber, the grade simply can’t be beat with current lumber. That high grade old lumber came from very old trees that aren’t common in most of our forests today.

I'm no expert on lumber types. I think the old lumber here is pine. Sure smells like it when cut. The homesteader got his lumber - off site. None of my pine trees were ever cut for lumber.

When we moved here in 1982 there were no old stumps anywhere on the property.

He sure could have got a whole lot of lumber from the ancient pines on the property. However - at that time access was VERY limited. Must have been a real pain getting the lumber on-site. There were three out buildings and the final homestead house.

Physical access was not created until we moved here and had the driveway run down the easement. Up until that time access was down an old trail on the neighbors property. Then 100 feet across a water filled moat and up thru many pine stands. I can remember walking the last quarter mile, to the homesteaders house, because there was too much water in the moat. My father got our car stuck in the moat one time. Lesson learned.
