kubota b1550
I did the first oil change on my b1550 today and probably overfilled it by something less than 1/2 a qt. The filter didn't soak up as much as I thought it would. will it hurt anything? should I drain any out?

thanks,
dave

The effect of overfilling is that the oil level is closer to the bottom of the pistons and the splash will cause over lubrication to the bottom of the cylinder walls and the rings will not be able to control the excess oil. It will also foam in some cases. Overfilling can also lead to blown seals and other oil leaks. You should be able to loosen the pan drain plug a little and allow a small amount to drain out. I would drain and know that the correct amount is in the crankcase if it were my tractor.

If it were a quart or more I'd drain it out. Less than half a quart I don't think I'd worry about it. You're probably only talking a small amount higher level than full.

thanks. I think I'll drain off a little more out of curiosity than anything. and I'll have a rough calibration of the dipstick that way.

It is my understanding that overfill is more dangerous than underfilled. Other than a bit of a mess I would drain some of it out. Some motors overfilled will force the extra out or burn it out also.

u might want to drain a bit out. what i do is put in the exact amt the tractor call for, then run it a few min. and then let it sit for awhile, check for leaks and then recheck the level. sometimes overfilling can be as bad as slightly under filled

forgot to mention, as an example i had a car that the dipstick broke, so i went to junk yard and got another, a few weeks latter when checking the oil i noticed it was low, so i added to the full mark. next day on the way to work after about 10 miles the smoke stared pouring out of the hood, pulled over and found the filler cap laying on the engine and oil all over. it hit all the hot areas of the engine and smoked. seem the junk yard gave me the wrong dip stisk so the engine was over filled. did not do any damage but sure caused me to need a new set of jockey shorts /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
