I have a Ford 1520 built in 1993. The front axel near the left wheel is leaking what I believe to be transmissioin fluid. It is not coming from the wheel but the assembly near the wheel. Tractor is 4 wheel drive. Seems to leak running or not. No noise from transmission when running. Any ideas on what is cause of leak and what it would take to fix?

My '93 1520 4x4 leaked at the upper spindle seals from grit getting under the lips while doing boocoo FEL work. I&T's FO-46 manual covers the '20 series Shibaura-made Fords quite well, and new seals weren't all that much at the local FNH dealer. Replaced both in an afternoon. Could be you have the same issue I did, and the fix is hardly a biggie. Book & parts were ~$80 US. I kept the manual when I traded but can PM you pics of the pertinent pages. tog

There are small differences between '90s 1520 (1.3L) and current T-1520 (1.7L). Had the first (have book) and have the second now. Front spindles on the T-1520 resemble those on the older TC-30, 1720, 1920. Will PM what pics I can.

Basically, you'll remove the steering arm (4 bolts on top cover of the knuckle assy) and the 'bevel gear housing' and vertical drive shaft can be lowered to access the seal (#14) between the knuckle & main tube. The one other seal is behind the wheel bearing. PM coming.

I did replace my spindle seal and that solved the problem. I would recommend the manual mentioned. It took me a bit longer than an afternoon but I was able to get it done and the leaks are gone!
