Anyone else notice that after a fresh oil change, that the new motor oil turns ashy black on the dipstick within a couple hours of operation?

Is that normal? My dad says his MT250d does exactly the same thing...

I use rotella oil, and a new oil filter when I change the oil on my S470d.
It's my first diesel tractor, so I wasn't sure if that was normal or what. Seems to run fine. I don't think it uses any oil.

Does the same on my MT372. I also had a Dodge with Cummins diesel and it did the same thing. Must be normal.

Yes, this is normal for a diesel engine. That is carbon blow by from the pistons. The oil is designed to keep it suspended. Thus, it turns black. This is why it is important to use an oil that is designed for a diesel engine. Diesel oil has an ability to hold more of this ash than conventional oil.
