Morning folks.

Just serviced the tractor and in doing so remembered the box on the front of the gear case with the plug marked "Oil"; what is this for? When I open it, I don't see oil, there is no dipstick, I just see the gears. Nothing in the manual says anything about it. I always assumed it was my power steering pump, but I guess not.

Thanks

Oil gets added at the valve cover.

You can add oil there as well. It's an oil fill cap. Either one works.

Ok, good to know. What's the point of having two points I wonder?

I see it on a lot of manufactures, not just branson. I suppose if that engine was put in a different application and the valve cover would be an easier spot to fill than the side.

It is not easy to add oil on top since the hood opening is not great along with the exhaust sitting on top of the valve cover.

I my Bransons have fill ports on both sides painted yellow for easily recognizing. The one on the left has the dipstick, on the right it doesn't. Drains are on both sides and in the center.

On what oil to use, my 6530 is a 2007 model and the same oil used in the common sump (Premium trans-hyd) was recommended in the Owner's Manual. My 2016 comes with 80w-90 and it's marked on the fill cap with the dip stick and specified in the OM. When I bought my replacement parts for my 6530 front end (which I abused) the seller said that 85w-140 is preferred in our climate. Haven't had a problem since.

If I could I'd put thick oil in the 2400s tranny also but I can't being common sump. Shifting would be smoother and less crunching shifting with the throttle up off idle. The 6530 is shuttle and it doesn't care.

The 6530 holds 2.5 gallons and the 2400 about 1 gallon.
