Off-road (red dye) diesel

/ Off-road (red dye) diesel #41
Hey guys: Here is what you do. Watch local farm auctions for 250 gallon overhead fuel storage tank. Most farmers of any size do not use them and they sell them for scrap. These are gravity flow and will allow you to buy the minimum of 100 or 150 gallons. You may need to talk to your local farm fuel supplier and get on his good side. Perhaps a couple of friends can get together and fill the tank to buy the minimum quantity. I would not worry about fuel going bad unless storage for much longer than a year. I farm in South Dakota and have 1000 gallon storage with electric pump but have three of these tanks with stands on my farm. Will go to steel salvage when I have time. In South Dakota these tank at farm auction generally sell for $50 or less depending on scrap price.

How many of you you guys run off-road diesel in your tractors? Where do those of you that do get it from?

I'd really like to get a 55g drum of off-road diesel to just keep at the shop to refuel the tractor from instead of having to file for a refund on the road use tax from pump diesel but I'm having a hard time finding where to buy it...

I drive into town and gas up with red-dye diesel like so:

I have a 100 gallon fuel oil tank that I use for red diesel. When I dip it and get down to 5-8" left I call our local feul oil company and they send over a truck.
Costs a bit more than buying red at the pumps but when I used those 5 gallon jugs I used to always spill some. Probably haven't spilled a cup in the past ten years.... Last week I paid $1.07/ liter to fill the tank...

Around here, most of the convenience stores that sell on road diesel now sell off road diesel to. I have 2 places within 5 miles of my house that carry it.

Pretty much same thing here. Jiffy Mart seems to sell it at most of their locations around here...costs a few cents more than some of the other places charge, but not enough to warrant a special trip.

in alaska they had a purple dye they stopped using it because if fouled up some oil heaters I had around 500 to 900 gallons of oil in tanks for heat and used a little in my tractor paid around $7k per winter for #1 diesel only about $0.25 to $0.50 per gallon difference between delivered and taxed from the pump. place I got fuel from had a 50 gallon minimum but at 50 gallons you paid same as pump price the more you bought the lower the price.
