What with my schedule, I do not have much time for evening TV these days. With what little I do have, I have not seen much of the folks spot lighted on the biker build off shows.

Save for Arlen Ness whom I consider talented but rather pompous, there were some good builders highlighted on that series.

Of all the shows and motorcycle guys out there, Arlen Ness is the only one I've met. He was a client when I drove for Airborne Express at his old shop in San Leandro. That was in the late 80's, or early 90's. The shop was kind of a dump and nothing special. A good buddy of mine was friends with him and they rode together a few times, but then drifted apart over the years.

When Discovery Channel started those shows and OCC came along, the place was pretty dead. I can't say for sure if it was the comeback of Harley then, or the popularity of the TV shows, but Ness went from doing his thing in a run down shop in the East Bay, to a multi million dollar facility in the Valley.

I used to work across the street from their new shop and know people that work for them or used to work for them. Paul Sr has been bankrupt at least a couple times. Probably will be again. Paul Sr. really isn't a bad guy, just typical New Yorker. He isn't rude, he's just from NY. Junior however, is a different story. As arrogant as they come. I could tell you stories about Mikey. He needs to put the pipe down, if you know what I mean.

Andy, Odd as this sounds, I've a sneaking suspicion that Mikey is the brains behind the show. Like the Smothers brothers, the "dumb" one wasn't at all dumb. What do you think? MikeD74T

I've been riding motorcycles for almost 40 years and have had the chance to ride some of those "old school" chopper designs (not OCC), and cannot imagine ever actually spending money to buy one, unless I had a Jay Leno kind of collection.

They ride like crap, and if you have more than 18 years old (at which age you are invulnerable), the hard tail frames are killers on your back on northeast roads.

Admittedly I am showing my age by the fact I now ride a Harley Electra Glide, with cruise control, radio/CD, and a comfy seat. But I would head for the west coast on mine without giving it a second thought (except for the wife and job thing) knowing it would be a great ride.

An OCC bike is/was cool from the fabrication point of view for a few shows, but that has grown old.

For mindless TV, I do kind of like "Flip This House" on A & E, but wonder how they find a contractor to paint a large house for $1,000?

:D

Since it is supposed to be a rainy afternoon here, I think I'll dig out my Easy Rider and Wild Angels movies for an old school biker marathon.

If one remembers why TV exists (to create consumer buying from advertising) then much of what has been stated rings true. I have no doubt that this show got its start from the antics of father -son business relationships. I could of created my own show when I was in the bakery business with my dad but how many flour fights could you have. This show is tracking in the same way and it has gotten tired so it did need an infusion of new drama. The bike craze will go the way of the cigar craze of the late nineties and a custom 35-60 grand bike have just so many buyers. I would not doubt that as a company, they are in financial trouble as credit has dried up, gotten tighter and would you really want to loan someone money to buy an expensive motorcycle that they might be offed on and stop payments as a result? Especially in these times. They can dramatize all they think they need to, I think they know better how to ruin a good thing rather than sustain it. In a design sense, their one off bikes are quite hideous in my mind and their custom bikes for sale are rather cookie cutter examples of what can be done with premanufactured frames, tins and paint. I do not think it will help their cause because I question their mental acumen and actual skill level in regard to survivability. Its a tough business and I applaud them jumping on an opportunity with what was then a good idea, but its about dried up.

I think it was Sig on the Northwestern that said - We don't go fishing because there's a show, there's a show because we go fishing. When the show's gone we''ll still go fishing. MikeD74T

Here's an old school bike pix. It's a 49 HD that my uncle built. Note the suicide clutch and jockey shift. It was a old police bike when he got it back in the late 60's. Wax it up and I would put it up against anyting OCC has done.
