Shake Hands with Danger

Ever since I first saw this, I hear that riff in my head whenever I do something dangerous. It usually makes me slow down and re-think what I'm doing. Can't beat old safety films for telling it like it is.
Years ago I was the first outsider on the scene after a hiker had slipped on ice and fallen 100 feet onto a frozen river. When I got there his daughter said "he's gone", and a quick glance told me she was right. At the time I was self employed, cruising timber and offering other services over a 4 state region. I often would leave home for weeks at a time, with nobody to check in with until it was time to turn in data and an invoice.

After that day I might find myself doing something dicey but his face would appear in front of mine. I would stop and think "Let's find a better way." One day I was snowshoeing down a steep hill in Vermont on some rather crusty snow. I decided to take the webs off and carry them... about 100 yards later I came to a pretty good cliff, and with the shoes on likely would have been unable to stop.

It took a long time to realize how I knew the accident victim was dead... he had stopped bleeding. 20+ years later I still see those dead blue eyes looking up into nowhere.

Safety forum can really make a guy paranoid.

Ballast, spacers, go slow, gravity and Darwin, I thought I get it.

Now I'm even questioning storing a couple 5G of diesel with my gas in the well house or using a floor jack and car stands to work on a tractor.

Maybe just information overload, carry on and don't be a dummy?
You can certainly store gas with diesel but why in your well house?

Well house is where ZT, rider, mower and tools live, garden type storage.

Don't forget about all the lithium batteries you have laying around.

In my experience, almost everything I have to do can be done safely. But - and it happens more than I like to say - when I feel rushed or tired I tend to think of using shortcuts and then the danger is 5x greater.

That is when I have to say stop. This can wait until tomorrow.

Survival is a series of correctly calculated risks.

You can store gas, diesel, and lithium safely together or separate

So many accidents happen when people are tired. Not a good idea to try to do that last whatever it is with a power tool or tractor when its just about quitting time.
I had a safety inspector who told me once most accident reports begin 'I reached' or 'I stepped'. Be careful out there
