Notched vs smooth disks

As far as atv discs go, do notched disks pulverize the soil more, or less than smooth disks?
Which require more power to pull?

Notched discs cut/pulverize better.
But the greater issue is harrow weight bearing on each disc.
The general rule for adequate cutting with disc harrows is 40 pounds bearing on each disc.
ATV discs are usually just a fraction of that so do not expect too much.......
All disc harrows cut better after a good rain.

Notched and smooth discs pull the same.

So if you want to keep some structure to the soil (not complete powder) its best to use smooth blades after it is broken up?

i like notched blades with vegitation.. and smooth for leveling.

Notched discs are more prone to breakage or deforming than smooth discs when rocks are encountered, especially at speed.

I doubt this is much of an issue with ATV harrows, which are light, and likely to ride up and over rocks.

Its not like having a 2,500 pound disc harrow, traveling at speed, encountering a big chunk of granite.

Trust me, this will not be an issue with any ATV harrow.

Tractor tandem harrows are frequently sold with all notched blades, or notched front + round/smooth rear; rarely with round + round.

Give yourself a chance. Buy your ATV harrow with notched blades.

Why is that?

They will often bend or break the ends of the notch!
