Just to throw in my .02.. Possibly take a look at Husqvarna garden tractors? I was in the same dilemma last year and really wanted a X5 but couldn't see spending $5-6k on a mower, although I'm sure they are awesome I couldn't do it. Ended up with a GT48XLS with fabricated deck and tuff torq K66 tranny with diff lock. Not too fond of the BS motor but fired right up fine all last year and so far so good this year(knock on wood). Way more than enough power, couldn't bog it down even when I tried to mowing in the horse pasture a few times. My only dislike is the "rocker switch" for the diff lock since it takes a few seconds to engage and disengage. All for a $3500 price tag.... longevity is unknown though hoping it lasts 10+yrs

To buy a Husqvarna could you put together the extra $1000 - $1500 above your stated budget?

Well guys for better or worse I have the game plan. I was at lowes to get some downspouts to fix my gutters and found a troy bilt super bronco in the clearance pen. had a 24hp kohler twin like a few cubs I looked at and looked like the same frame. salesman said it was a "factory recondition" that had an accident in the store (rear fenders were bent up a bit). Anyhow it had 13hrs on it and they said I could take it for $1100, I also signed up for a lowes card so when the cashier rung up the sale she took %10 off the tractor price too (not sure if she was supposed to or not) so I got it for $990 before tax. I know its probably bottom of the barrel quality but for that price I think its worth a chance (still has the two year warranty but being from a box store its probably about useless). If it will get me through this year with a bit of help from the cub and I can get the 107 rebuilt this winter I may try to sell it next summer and look for something a bit sturdier as a backup (or just keep it if it works out ok).
