I am still trying to figure how to split Ash with a maul. Two years drying and the maul barley makes a dent. I see why they make bats out of that wood.

Tons of dead Ash in our area.

Get two splitting wedges and sledge hammer, make a divot with your saw deep enough so that the wedges don't bounce out when you hit them. Depending on the size of the tree you can split it in half or in quarters, then got to work at it with the maul.

All the ash are dead in WI. 2 years ago, I cut what I thought was ash in UP. Split this year. Burns hot. Split easy enough. I don't have a spliter so I only split it if it is dead or been in the wood shed for awhile. One of my hack tests to see if dry enough to burn, is if it splits easy.
