Im new to cuts, I have been doing some work around the property that requires moving dirt and some mild digging such as cutting water breakers in my driveway. My question is during normal operation what is the best rpm to set the the engine at? I致e been running my jd3120 at around 2300 and it seems happy since it痴 max torque is right around that. Is this too high or low?

Seems pretty good to me. Running it at low rpm all the time can lead to soot build up and not enough heat build up for DPF regeneration.

I run between 2000 and 2500 rpm all the time.

I only idle for 1 minute at cold start and 1 minute prior to shut down.

2100 rpm is the 'sweet spot' on my 4105 for just about anything I'm doing unless I'm using the PTO, of course. Anything more and I'm simply sucking more fuel for the same amount of work.

Thx for the reply痴, I know that my tractor makes peak hp around 2600 rpm but running it that high seems excessive and would be burning more fuel. Last Saturday I worked the machine for 5 hrs and burnt roughly 2.5 gal of fuel which I thought was pretty good.

2000 rpm if your not in hurry, just don't lug the motor down.

Task dependent?

I was digging post holes with my PHD this past weekend. 800-900 worked best, easier to control the auger.

I've been playing around with stall-guard and auto-throttle. Under auto-throttle it seems like 2K rpm is where the tractor goes to when you touch the go pedal, and it goes up from there. Admittedly I did some napkin math and the tractor's weight, fully dressed up, is about a ton more than bare weight. 6100lbs operating weight and 35HP make for a high rev situation, I guess.

I usually worked the L3301 at PTO RPM, even if I was pulling a box blade or working the FEL. Kept the pump noise down somewhat and gave better control "feel".

Like widefat - task dependent. My "hardest" task - plowing snow/clearing driveway ditches. There I will run up to 2100 rpm. I think that's around the same rpm to get 540 at the pto when I run the chipper.

Summer driveway surface maintenance - around 1800 rpm. I go slow - easier to control the job and its outcome.

I can make mistakes fast enough even at slower speeds/rpm's. No need to speed this up.

Depends on what I'm doing. If I'm running a pto tool, then either 2000 on 540E, or 2500 on straight 540. If I'm doing FEL work, then I set the idle up to 1500 (increases bucket curl/dump speed), and the linked foot pedals will increase engine rpm as I call for more ground speed.
