Ok, a newbie question about the 3pt hydraulics: I have an L3400; does the hydraulic power only work "up" and the "down" is gravity?

It is power up and then gravity down, if you have a moldboard plow the amount of suck you have(allow) will also pull the moldboard further in the ground as well.

That is correct. If you push the lever forward on mine with nothing on the hitch, the arms just slowly sink down. Push it forward with the box blade connected and you better have your toes out of the way.

The good thing is gravity never breaks

Or ... well ... if it does, we're all in deep trouble. GRAB HOLD OF SOMETHING!!! (Oops, no, that wouldn't help)

Don't stop there.

google "single acting hydraulic cylinder" (A) and contrast with "double acting hydraulic cylinder" (B).
