Hello all, first post to this awesome site. I have 3 acres and am looking at some used tractors. I have two options at the moment. New Holland TC24DA (24HP) with FEL and box scraper w/ 243 hrs, hydro, 4x4, rear and mid PTO $10,500. Tractor is clean (residential use). John Deere 790 (27HP) with FEL, older but working brush hog and back snow blade w/ 418hrs, 8 forward and 2 reverse, 2wd/4wd filled tires, rear PTO only, $10,500. JD is a little more ç*¥sed but still in good shape (used on farm). I like both but am leaning to the NH. Both have advantages that I like. NH hydro, mid and rear PTO. JD little more HO and implements that I need. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Never had a new holland but I got a 790, been an excellent little tractor for us. We run a small farm and the 790 is the go to tractor for everyday chores around the farm. We use it for about everything. Runs a 5' bushhog easily. Got a little forestry winch for the back and it amazes me. Rakes and teds hay with the best of them. Loader is quick and nimble, we handle dry round bales with it, as well as scraping the barn and feed lot out. Have a hoe, although we don't use that a lot it does come in handy. Only problems we have had in 6 years is front end seals and as a result final drive gears, this is a direct result of heavy loader work with no ballast, definately our own fault and actually cheaper fix than I anticipated. I am not sur on the hours but its gotta be right up there, probably double the 418 maybe more.

I don't know anything about the NH, but the JD790 is a fine tractor. Ya just gotta get used to the 'non-synchronized' tranny. It takes the 'double-clutch' technique to shift while moving............just like a tractor-trailer, otherwise you'll grind the gears.

Thanks for your reply's. I gave the NH a closer look today and really liked the Hydro. Only saw one potential issue that has me thinking. There was a little fluid by each of the differential seals / gaskets (two in the back and one up front). Do you think this an issue (big/small) with the number of hours on this tractor or is this common? I am attaching a picture of the back, one side. Other than that it looks and drives well. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Ted,

Welcome!

I don't know much about the 790. I bought brand new (still have) a TC24DA in 2004 and have close to 900 (hard) hours on it with a few issues (nothing major in my opinion).

I dont have much time tonight to go into great detail about my experiences with this NH (gotta get some shut-eye, I'm Mr. Mom tommorrow) but if you do a SEARCH FOR POSTS STARTED by me "JSUnlimited" you should get a good idea of the projects, modifications, and repairs involving my NH. I pretty much know this tractor inside and out by now and would I but it again, absolutely!

If I get a chance tommorrow, I'll get back on here and go into detail. I'm sure you need to make a move soon, so I'll try and get back here in the morning. BTW, I would not worry about the oil you see.

I noticed too that you posted the same on the NH forum. I'll mainly reply here in case others are shopping and don't visit the NH section.

Thanks for the reply, your history of projects / posts are great! I find out on the morning if I get my tractor. This is my first tractor and I am interested in any info I can get.

Not so much because of the issues I have had with my NH, since it may have just been a select few tractors with the issues it has, but more so because of my experience in dealing with NH itself, I would reccomend the JD. One thing I learned was that with NH for any warranty work, you can only bring it back to the original dealer for the repairs. I was told I could bring it to any NH dealer, which I did and was explained that they would not work on it because NH only covers 60% of the warranty work, so it is not worth it for a different dealer to do the work. I ended up at the origanal dealer, which is almost 3 hours away. I did find that NH is difficult to deal with regarding warranty. Just bthought you may want to take this into consideration. Which ever you decide to go with, be sure to read the fine print and get anything you are told in writing! unfortunately a man's word and handshake isn't what it used to be:ashamed: Good luck to ya:)

I would go for the hydro hands down. Personal preference of course!

I have and have had many tractors. I personally wouldn't buy another gear tractor unless it was over 50 HP and up and maybe not even that.

For the small, round the place tractor nothing beats a hydro for ease of use.

that said I have an X55 series JD which I think is a little newer than that 790 and it also has been a fantastic realiable tractor.

Probably can't go wrong with either but for the prices I would go with the NH.
