I inherited a 271 bailer a 478 and 495 mower The bailer and 478 are both in a barn and look moderatly serviceable. the 495 has disapeared under a briar patch. Does any one have books for any of these. I need to know what hp they run on and if they are likely to be a money pit for repairs.

My dad just bought a New Holland 273. He is in the process of sanding and priming it. I'll post some pics when it's done. He bought it for $700. He is planning on running it with a Fordson supermajor. Its 69HP I think. Good luck with the equipment.

you can still by all the parts for the new holland lines. Good machinery. knotters can be a problem if you have not played with them before. Also the blade to guillotine clearance is critical. The rakes are fool proof, that is why mine never work!

If you want manuals I have a set or have a good source for them. There are a few things in this equipment that looks simple but will give you a serious head ache if you are not aware of it ins and outs of the equipment. For example on the tongue of the bailer on the bottom side the bolts are meant to be carriage, if someone has put normal bolts in there you will bend bails and break strings link there is no tomorrow, ask me how I know.

I am a fan of NH equipment and they had the southern Idaho hay market for many years. They lost there customer focus in the 90s and now Heston is the big name here.

sorry for the double post got a 500 and then the 2nd post. the wife has used these types of things before when she was a kid on the farm.. I am new to it all i got the joy of cotton country. I worry about the expense of repair then upkeep. I am glad to hear nh is a good brand for older equip. just hope the mowers will work on the tractor. heard the bailer needs 45 min so im squeakin in there.

yea, that would be on the bottom end. I run mine with 100 hp or so but do not run it hard. balers are funny critters, they like to be full and fed consistently. If you can slow your tractor down, feed with a good wind row that is constant in amount you will do ok.

If you go to fast you will get clogs, and if to slow it will sound like it is taring its self apart. All I can say is get out and try. Getter done!
