Next Project: Gauge Wheels for Rake & Blade

SkunkWerX,
Have parts on order. Just a couple of questions. First, how did you determine how far in to place the wheels? I have a 7' rake, and was thinking maybe a foot from the ends.

When the jack is fully retracted, how much space do you have between the bottom of the wheels and the bottom of the rake? I'm thinking from reading your reports in other posts that I won't need more than 2 or 3". Most of my use will be for grooming the gravel drive and trails in the woods.

Thanks,

Good questions!!

I'm thinking 1 foot from each end should be fine, that's along the lines of what I did.
If you want to be able to also angle the rake, you need to check for conflict there, too. I moved mine inward enough that I could still get to the first angle notch.

I shot for around 2" when fully retracted, that is, when the rake tines are touching a level surface, the wheels are 2" off the ground. I think I ended up being a little higher than that, maybe 2.5" to 3" , but that is the ballpark I was aiming for.
If i remember correctly, those jacks have a travel of approx. 10" or so?

I can't ever see having them fully retracted , unless I want to feel of not having wheels at all, maybe it would beat removing them for a quick job.

I'm thinking, on a gravel drive, or hard packed dirt road, having them set 2" UP, they may never touch the ground.
In soft dirt you will have some natural sinkage to account for.

Sounds like you are well into it, post some pics once you start putting steel together. Good Luck!!

Thanks! It will probably be a week or more before everything arrives and I can assemble the parts. I'm going to use them on my box blade and RB too. But I'll post pictures when I have them mounted on the rake.

Any way to get the pics in this thread?
I'm wanting to build a similar set. Awaiting the trailer jacks from HF, already have some wheels, I think might work. Didn't know how long to make the arms or height. Useful thread.

any updates?

Sodamo,
If you notice the dates, this thread is quite a few years old. You should start a new thread about gauge wheels and see what people have to say/show.

Yea, noticed the dates. Somewhat a coincidence that I had ordered the same HF jacks before stumbling on this thread.

After I receive my jacks, via slow boat, I will likely start a thread.

Thats the major problem with host the pics off-site with a third party, if the user moves the pics the links get broken.

I'm wanting to do the same thing. Looking forward to your pictures.

I too am interested in building a set of wheels for my blade. Don't have a rake at this time but plan to get one so want to make it usable on both.
