A recent build. Cat 324D with EWF-170 powerpack and DAH-150ER. Cuts a 8" tree okay. :D Anything under 56" in fair game. What a blast to run! BUT..the notes sure to bite!! Enjoy, more to come.

I see nothing but trouble ahead for that big bulky power unit, in a real working situation.

You must not operate a mulcher...

I see nothing but trouble ahead for that big bulky power unit, in a real working situation.

These unit are usually built for the toughest jobs, "extreme working conditions".
I also can see your point of view. But A few points I think you don't see.
1. The powerpack and framing weight less than 3000 lbs.
2. The powerpack is located almost directly over the turret motor, maintaining machine balance with a 3500 lbs head mounted.
3. By placing the pack on top as we did we do not increase the swing radius of the machine, actually helping it the woods with a tighter profile.
4. Lastly we could and do offer a counterweight mount, but this adds cost, complexity, and increased swing radius. Customer choice.

See what you think.

I`m not speaking of or demeaning the durability of the unit in anyway. I am coming strictly from a vunerability stand point due to low hanging branches broken limbs, blind spots ext, you dont have to have run a mulcher to see those hazards. After more than 25yrs in the land clearing, demolition and excavation business even the best of operators gonna rub a counter wieght or misjudge the distance from that last group of trees or what ever that he worked past from time to time. I have over 20.000hrs on my currant 330L which I bought new and am the only one to ever run it, wish I could claim it to be dent free but no, and I am extremly carefull. I had hunch this post might ruffel some feathers.

This machine wasn't made for thinning. On most mulching jobs everything is cleared so no need to get in tight spaces or under hanging branches (which could be mowed out of the way). I had the saleman trying to sell me an old beat up excavator "since it was going to get beat up" but other than a few small scratches...no dents or damage of any kind.
